It’s hard to believe but it’s ten months since I first blogged on Cisco Domain TenSM, which is Cisco Service’s framework to guide you on your path to data center and cloud transformation. I’ve now covered all ten domains of this concise and powerful model. I’ll now collect all articles -- including my most Cisco Domain Ten article around the breadth of SDN adoption challenges -- into this one article as a useful summary. So forgive the brevity and please do dive into the links/URLs for more information if indeed you missed these articles first time. Going back, now, I started in December 2012, with our launch of Cisco Domain Ten, where I set the focus for my series of articles as cloud transformation. Let me summarize each article with (and for those that know me you’ll know this is a struggle ) just one sentence with the key message from each blog/domain.
Like most industries, security has gone through many different evolutions. Over the past 20 years, the industry has been largely product focused, with customers deploying point products across the network in an effort to “cover” all security gaps. Over time and with the arrival of mobile, social and cloud, customers now recognize that having all the security products in the world is not going to close all the gaps. Today’s customers are looking for fully integrated solutions – a combination of services, products and people.
This is where Cisco delivers. We are elevating our security solutions efforts with the creation of a Services Security Practice, led by security industry veteran Bryan Palma, who comes to Cisco with an extensive background in both services and security. Reporting to Edzard Overbeek, Senior Vice President of Cisco Services, Bryan’s team will build three new service categories for our customers: Consultation; Product Implementation and Support; and Managed Services for enterprises and governments.
Cisco’s integrated security strategy is to defend, discover and remediate the most critical threats. With world-class products, research teams, global intelligence, advanced threat protection – and now services – our customers will benefit from continuous security in more places across the infrastructure.
Operational process and governance, as I discussed last month, is “Domain 10″ in the Cisco Domain Ten(SM) model for data center transformation. It’s so important in my opinion, and so often disregarded or de-prioritised when planning and executing data center transformation, that I’ll cover it twice!
Domain Ten: Process and Governance aka Operations Management
Last time, I discussed some of the “Process and Governance” questions that may- indeed should -- be on your mind when planning data center changes. While you may think of Cisco Services as primarily an architecture and design specialist organization, I hope my Cisco Domain Ten blogs series has shown you we can help you with a lot more than infrastructure design.
In fact, recently, we revised our data center operations management services that we offer to help customers like you accelerate operational success with the new technologies and solutions that they are deploying. We’ve consolidated the best of our service provider and enterprise operations management service offerings, including ITIL focus, together with our internal experience in running “Cisco on Cisco” – resulting in what we now call Cisco Data Center Services for Operations Enablement, illustrated below.
So Cisco Live 2013 has just wrapped up and I thought I’d build upon my previous Cisco Live post regarding what it’s like to be a presenter at Cisco Live, but this time from the perspective of an engineer in the Meet the Expert program. As a customer if you need advice you can enter the world of solutions and talk to someone in the main Cisco booth area, or head over to the red shirted engineers in the Design Clinics. However, what if you want to ask some questions in a more intimate setting, want to go deeper into the analysis of your problems or be able to talk about your network or infrastructure without having your competitor standing right next to you? Maybe you want to make sure the person you are working with has a background of exactly what you are looking for. Then you head over to the Meet the Expert area.
Having been part of the team who developed the Cisco Cloud Enablement Services, our professional services to help customers enable and adopt cloud computing, I was absolutely delighted watching the CiscoLive! keynote yesterday to hear Padmasree Warrior announce the results of the March 2013 IDC market research study that showed Cisco come out on top for cloud professional services [Source: “2013 U.S. Professional Services Opportunities Related to Cloud Services”, IDC Doc # 239862, March 2013].
In this survey, as the chart below shows (reproduced with the kind permission of IDC), respondents indicated that Cisco professional services were used most often across all of the three cloud categories that IDC measured: cloud applications, cloud application platforms, and cloud infrastructure. Ahead of Accenture, Microsoft, IBM, Oracle/Sun, HP and others.
