Another week…another News@Cisco recap!

The top stories of the week included a feature on  the growth in mobile commerce, an interactive infographic on greener data centers and a contributed article in Network World by John Chambers on the value of the network.

1.) Data Centers Don’t Need to Be Energy Hogs

Reducing the amount of energy that data centers consume is a top priority for many corporations because the cost savings and environmental benefits are significant. Integrating technologies such as virtualization, cloud computing and Cisco Unified Fabric into data centers can dramatically lower energy consumption. Cisco Quad in Action

In November 2010, Cisco introduced its own software-based enterprise collaboration platform: Cisco Quad. Underlying this platform at Cisco is the development of a transformed way of working that Cisco calls the Integrated Workforce Experience, or IWE. IWE powered by Cisco Quad extends the power of collaboration to employees by combining a foundation of video and unified communications with personalization and relevancy features, applications, and services on the network and integrating them with business and content management systems.

Integral to the IWE environment are collaborative communities created around job and organizational functions, roles, and topics of interest. Members of a community collaborate to achieve their goals, organize and access informational assets and transactional tools, and promote their interests.

Early adopters of IWE span multiple organizations across Cisco including Cisco’s Central Development Organization, Customer Value Chain Organization, and Finance teams to name a few. All these organizations who span multiple geographies and time zones, are already benefiting from an IWE environment that enhances their virtual collaboration and improves productivity; provide quick, convenient access to technical experts and knowledge sharing companywide; and inspires new ways of conducting the product development process.

The following case studies describe the business benefits that internal Cisco functions are reaping from their early implementations of IWE.

Collaboration is Hot … Very Hot (Collaboration solution now deployed across Cisco!)

I am thrilled to blog today about the deployment of Cisco’s own unique collaboration solution across our enterprise to 110,000 employees and contractors worldwide!

This is the culmination of a multi-year project which started as a business process and IT initiative, and evolved as a business unit endeavor after our CEO John Chambers said: “product-ize it.”  So, I’m grateful to my colleagues in the business unit – namely Murali Sitaram, vice president and general manager of the Enterprise Collaboration Platform – for taking ownership of the product and improving upon it. Congratulations, too, to my team in Communication and Collaboration IT, and to the Collaboration Business Technologies team whose vision, innovation, long hours, perseverance and creativity made it happen.

The Importance of Social Software in the Enterprise

Over the next few years, there will be a big transformation in the workplace as large numbers of Gen X and Y individuals start entering the workforce. As these same individuals rely on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter for communication, employers are pressured into bringing similar tools into their enterprises but, in a secure manner. Back in June, we announced limited availability for Cisco Quad, our software-based enterprise collaboration platform, and the response has been overwhelming.

When applied against specific operating problems, enterprise social software is a mission critical application for those companies that want to grow, expand into new markets and increase productivity. It can transform the workplace and provide unmatched benefits to an organization:

  • Easier access to resources and expertise, allowing the user to reach out to a large number of relevant participants and bring them into a virtual discussion around a specific problem or challenge. It also captures, and makes searchable, these informal conversations.
  • Real-time communications through integration with voice, IM w/presence, conferencing, and video
  • Saves time & resources and drives better utilization of existing systems through pre-integrations with common IT infrastructure platforms
  • Delivers social networking without the risk by using built-in, rules-based policy management to any sensitive data, in any format, behind the firewall
  • Simplifies content management with streamlined content sharing and search capabilities
  • Meets the needs of the mobile worker with apps designed for mobile devices

Murali Sitaram: How is Social Software Relevant for Business?

At the recent Enterprise 2.0 conference in Boston, we announced limited availability for Cisco Quad, an immersive platform for enterprise collaboration that integrates voice, video and social networking into one space. The next generation of worker is looking for new and innovative ways to collaborate and Quad offers that collaboration tool kit.

Cisco Vice President and General Manager Murali Sitaram spoke with Fox Business News anchor Brian Sullivan this morning and he asked him about how Cisco is working with corporate America to help them increase their productivity and enable new ways to work and share information other than through solely email.
