SAMREF Refinery Embraces Wireless Applications to address safety, reliability and efficiency

SAMREF is a joint venture between Saudi Arabian Oil Company (Saudi Aramco) and Mobil Yanbu Refining Company Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Exxon Mobil Corporation. The case study tells us that the SAMREF refinery complex in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia produces approximately 400,000 barrels of product daily including gasoline, heating oil, LPG, jet fuel and other energy products.

As a Control Engineering Article (Industrial wireless for mobile video monitoring) from a couple of months ago states:

“Since 2013, SAMREF has used a wireless network to enable Wi-Fi clients and ISA100 Wireless field instruments to wirelessly connect and to obtain measurements in hard-to-access locations; this works consistently and reliably in areas previously considered impractical or off-limits.

Even with the flexibility to quickly and cost-effectively employ wireless closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, however, it is impossible to cover the entire site. As a result, those in the central control room can end up with no view of intrusions, fires, explosions, or other incidents facing emergency response teams. Plant managers or operations directors are left in the dark, usually completely reliant on verbal information from the teams on the ground.

To overcome this problem, an industrial wireless provider worked with SAMREF to deploy a live video solution for its emergency command vehicle, a first responder to any incident”***

Well, you now know that the industrial wireless partner was Honeywell, providing a solid Cisco mesh-based solution, with an architecture similar to the Honeywell image shown below.

It’s clear that SAMREF were looking for a solution that would provide strong business benefits:

  • Safety: improving plant and worker security.
  • Reliability: improving maintenance program and/or reducing maintenance costs.
  • Efficiency: managing long distance installations or remote sites with minimal up-front and life-cycle costs.

So Honeywell were charged with enhancing the customers incident management procedures and rescue ops to improve employee safety. The solution had to have a wireless network that was rugged and able to reliably transmit quality video from cameras to central control sites and mobile “Incident Commander” vehicles. The OneWireless solution includes CISCO 1552S Access Points with integrated ISA100 Wireless**. Cisco especially designed our access points to be able to integrate with certain 3rd party protocol radios – and ISA100 being one of the main two. Each wireless access point at SAMREF includes three radios – one for communications with traditional transmitters, a second radio for communications with Wi-Fi devices and a third radio for high speed communications of field data. Behind-the-scenes Technologies at Sea: Norwegian Epic and Cisco Networking

Several years ago, I went on a cruise with my family. There were fun things to do on board the ship, and we even had ample time left over for other things after dining, exercising, and relaxing on the sun deck. At one point, I came across a brochure about the on-board power system innovations that really impressed me. In the past, dedicated diesel engines were used for different purposes such as propelling the ship and generating electricity for cabins. The new system pooled output from these engines to form a single power plant that delivered power for everything on board, allowing greater control of power and better efficiency. That was an excellent example of system resource consolidation and pooling to me, which is showing up in other technology areas as well, such as data center virtualization.

A newly published Cisco switching case study provided a lot of insight on how Norwegian Cruise Line deployed the latest technologies to innovate guest experiences in the cruise ship industry,
and to optimize IT operations. Whether guests want to completely unplug or still stay connected, Norwegian is enhancing guest experiences with better access to entertainment, communications, goods, and services through a more advanced network on its newest ships.

Edison’s Predictions for 2011 – yes, there are still a few days left before 2012!

This is the time of year that some of us bloggers decide to pontificate about the New Year that’s to come and what it will hold. Well more of that from me and my colleagues in a few days time.

With just a few days left in 2011, I see that the incandescent light bulb is on its last legs, according to legislation that passed through Congress in 2007, and is being enacted by the Federal government soon. California has already started it’s ban on the old light bulbs ahead of time – no more three-way light bulbs! What are we going to do now?! Poor Edison – one of his key inventions put out to grass as it were!

There are some things difficult to predict – Samoans will go to sleep tonight on Thursday and tomorrow wake up on Saturday, so that they can be more in line with their trading partners in the west, like Australia. That’s a way of localizing your supply chain. Who would have predicted that?

Manufacturing Gurus at work...

Caffeinated beer is on its way out too. Never tried the stuff myself, but I don’t think it will stop folks drinking energy drinks and vodka cocktails. I remember enjoying a couple of those at the Minus5 bar at CiscoLive 2011 in Vegas this year with some colleagues. It was a way for the sponsor to get us to take notice of what they did and work with them in the networking industry. Funny, but after a couple of those special drinks none of us could remember what on earth it was they were trying to sell us! Note to self: don’t use that method in our marketing campaigns!

So, back to Edison’s predictions. Oh yes, he made some in 1911 and predicted what the world would be like in 2011, so let’s see how well he did 100 years on. I predict that Edison’s predictions will be mostly 50/50 by the year end. Here’s why.  He said: Read More »
