May 22, 2014 at 11:22 pm PST

The collaboration momentum at continued today. First up this morning was a Cisco Live Executive Interview with Peder Ulander. In it Peder talks about how the way people work is changing and how Cisco is adapting technology to meet those changes.

He covers our latest DX Series products as well as shares how American Express is using remote expert and video to better serve customers. In a pilot program, premier customers could get an instant connection with the right person, whether to resolve billing problems or find concert tickets.

Today’s Locknote: Sal Khan, Khan Academy

Cisco to Students: Technology Skills Can Set You Apart

May 22, 2014 at 11:16 pm PST

“Follow your passion. You will shine when you truly love what you are doing.”

“Finish something, whether it is a degree or a certification. Nobody can ever take that away from you.”

“Be prepared and keep learning. When an opportunity comes you’ll be ready.”

This was just some of the advice and knowledge several hundred college students received from Cisco professionals during the first-ever Student Network Day at the Cisco Live customer education event in San Francisco today.

The event was designed to help students from the San Francisco Bay Area learn about technology trends and career options, and how technology skills can differentiate them no matter what career they choose. Some of the students take courses through Cisco Networking Academy, which trains people to design, build, maintain, and secure computer networks in partnership with community colleges, universities, and other organizations.

The day before her graduation from San Jose State University, Ellen Song attended Student Network Day at Cisco Live to learn more about the technology sector as a potential career path.

Wrapping up Cisco Live 2014

May 22, 2014 at 9:24 pm PST

Wow! It’s been a big, big week. This was my first Cisco Live and it did not disappoint. With more than 25,000 attendees on site, I have never been involved in such a huge customer event. I am always excited to interact with our customers and partners, and there were so many folks to talk to at this event it was almost overwhelming! Still, we whittled it down to a few folks that can give you an idea of why they make the investment to attend Cisco Live. Take a look at this video to see what some of our partners had to say.

Again, what an event! Here’s a quick wrap up of the last two days of Cisco Live 2014. Read More »

Collaboration Notes from Cisco Live: Wednesday Recap

May 22, 2014 at 10:48 am PST

Wednesday was another beautiful day in the neighborhood, the Moscone neighborhood. I started my day with a 6:30 a.m. conference call with some nice people in Amsterdam to talk about one of the topics John Chambers put front-and-center in his keynote address: business outcomes.

Hosted by Cisco’s Mala Anand, the Wednesday morning keynote focused on Internet of Everything and included Intel’s Doug Davis, NetApps’ George Kurian, and EMC’s Bill Schmarzo. For me, Schmarzo’s points on business models and big data were particularly interesting. His premise was essentially that at the core, the Internet of Everything and big data are about business transformation. A great quote: “Organizations don’t need a big data strategy, they need a strategy that incorporates big data.” Yes, yes, and yes.

Paras and Associates: Using Video to Remove Language Barriers
Melinda Paras was one of the customer speakers at the collaboration press announcements earlier this week. Paras is CEO of Paras and Associates (PAA), which designed and now manages the first operational video/voice over IP call center--the Health Care Interpreter Network (HCIN)--a cooperative of California public hospitals sharing interpreter services. PAA offers technology systems that enable immediate access to language interpreting via video and telephone.

“Clinicians trust that they can reach language interpreters instantly—whether they are across the street, or across the country,” says Paras. “High quality video enables a degree of nuance and rapport that you simply can’t achieve with just a telephone.” Read More »

Networking Academy Students Get Hands-On at Cisco Live

May 22, 2014 at 7:06 am PST

About ten years ago, Courtney Church was studying to be a personal trainer. Then she realized that “people didn’t want to work out, but they needed their computers fixed.” So she did a 180 on her career, spent 8 years with the Best Buy Geek Squad, then enrolled in a Cisco Networking Academy course at East Carolina State University in Greenville, North Carolina.

“I fell in love with it the first day,” Courtney says of Networking Academy. “I’ve always had a passion for figuring out how computers and technology work.”

This week, Courtney joined 25 other Networking Academy students from the United States and Canada at Cisco Live – our annual customer and partner education event – to help a team of Cisco engineers maintain the massive computer network that supports more than 20,000 conference attendees.
