I just returned from Cancun after delivering a BYOD seminar, as part of Cisco Live Mexico 2012. Bring your own device (BYOD) was a hot topic at Cisco Live in Cancun. There were several in-depth presentations regarding the architecture, design, implementation, and troubleshooting of all the technologies related to BYOD. I had the pleasure and opportunity to deliver a presentation related to remote access VPN implementations related to BYOD, as part of an 8-hour seminar:
- TECRST-2020 – Bring Your Own Device – Architectures, Design and Operation.
Other BYOD-related sessions delivered this week were:
- BRKEWN-2020 – Securely Managing the BYOD Phenomena
- BRKCOC-1567 – Inside Cisco IT: BYOD… Coping with the Explosion of Mobile Devices in the Enterprise
Imran Bashir provided a detailed introduction about BYOD and the key considerations when implementing BYOD solutions and technologies in your environment. He then went into the details about the Cisco BYOD solution and the integration with the Mobile Device Management (MDM) solutions from other vendors and partners. This was followed by product demonstrations for device on-boarding, profiling, posture/compliance check and the integration with MDM third-party solutions.

Cisco’s collaboration solutions have been front and center over the past two weeks at both Cisco Live and Enterprise 2.0, the premier conference for social business technologies. I had the opportunity to attend both conferences and was energized by the incredible momentum we have in the market with the integrated collaboration solutions we’re providing to the marketplace.
The customers, reporters and analysts I’ve talked to recognize that the notion of a traditional workplace is changing. Employees are more mobile than ever before. People are collaborating across geographic locations and time zones, so work is conducted in a more virtual and time-shifted manner. Social technologies in the workplace allow people to leverage talent, experts, colleagues and customers around the world.
Cisco’s goal is to lead this market transition. At Enterprise 2.0, we unveiled Read More »

From the IT Executive Symposium at Cisco Live 2012
When you strip away all the hype and emotion around the word “innovation,” you end up with a simple but powerful concept: Innovation is about doing something new that creates value. Innovation isn’t just important—it’s critical to a company’s growth and success.
In his keynote at Cisco Live 2012, Cisco Chairman and CEO John Chambers discussed the importance of being able to capitalize upon market transitions. This requires both innovation (the ability to adapt) and agility (the ability to change quickly, to be flexible). One of the most interesting comments I heard was in the IT Executive Symposium, where several discussions focused on dealing with today’s economic uncertainties. The point was made that innovation most often occurs when we find ourselves deeply challenged. As Jeff DeGraff, professor of business management at the University of Michigan stated, “That is when the risk-reward model is inverted.” Read More »

As I get ready to head to the airport to attend Cisco Live it has me thinking about the travel experience and how it relates to the collaboration experience. While some aspects of the travel experience can be quite pleasurable, there are many that aren’t – security screening, delays, BYOF (bring your own food), among others.
The same is true for collaboration. Just like every airline promotes similar amenities, many collaboration vendors promote “rich experiences”, especially for video, which sound very similar – HD, interoperability, standards, scalability. But the reality can sometimes be quite different: buffering, jitter, pixelization, dropped calls, and failed connections to name a few.
I believe experience matters and if we can provide consistent, predictable, rich experiences for users, then collaboration will flourish. This is what Cisco is focused on and I think we are far ahead of the competition. I encourage you to join me Read More »

Criminals continue to evolve as does the threat landscape. Their targets are your business assets and disrupting the availability of your business operations. Why you ask? Well, it depends on what you have to offer and its value, or who you may have negatively provoked. The risk, impact, and amount of exposure will vary from incident to incident. Some questions to think about. Read More »
