All right I confess I’m not that kind of geek. I admire and work with many IT engineers, but if you need me to configure a Nexus switch you’ll be out of luck. I am a geek though, and I know about building successful B2B and B2C Ambassador Programs.
Before I start sharing my 2 cents, let’s take a look at what I mean by Ambassador Programs. Below are three major types. This is a simplified scenario but these large buckets help clarify.
Ambassador Program Types
1. Cast of Thousands: this type of program focuses on amplifying large volumes of content externally. Membership is open to anyone who registers, and includes automated content delivery, gamification, and tracking, where participants are rewarded for their actions in real time. Actions include low-hurdle social media tasks like sharing existing content to social media networks, rating a product, or entering a contest, but can also offer more challenging projects like writing a review, helping users solve problems, and communicating with potential customers. Ideally, ambassadors’ actions are integrated with a CRM platform in order to track ROI. I was selected as a Cisco Champion for the year 2014. Becoming a Cisco Champion is a privilege for Cisco enthusiasts and experts who are passionate about sharing, teaching, and discussing (Cisco) network technologies. In this blog post, I want to tell you about the road I took from my first CCNA classes (Cisco Network Academy) to becoming a Cisco Champion.
My networking career started ten years ago with Cisco Network Academy. In those days, Cisco Network Academy was a pretty new learning ‘center’ but it had enough information to help you start your career in the networking field. At my university, we used Network Academy modules during the semester. We had 2 or 3 chapter exams every week! To gain more understanding about the theories, we were required to attend labs. During my university years I needed to study for the Network Academy exams every day. Not just every day, but really every day! Last year, I had the opportunity to meet with Harvard Business School Associate Professor of Business Administration Mikolaj Jan Piskorski. Prof. Piskorski had heard about the Cisco Learning Network, and decided that he wanted to learn more about Cisco’s innovative use of social strategy and our collaborative approach to IT education that addresses the challenges and opportunities of the networked economy.
The Cisco Learning Network represents a fundamental shift in education strategy for Cisco and the technology industry as a whole. The site serves as a meeting place for social learning and is a community resource designed to help new students and new customers to get into the networking industry by reinforcing the skills and competencies it takes to achieve certification. The community also offers an unprecedented model for recruiting individuals to IT careers and filling skills gaps in key technology areas.
