This is a day-long seminar inviting customers and potential customers to find out about and discuss the technical specifics, capabilities, and applications of Cisco’s entire switching portfolio. The seminars are being held all over the US from the end of October and through the beginning of December. Everyone looks forward to Friday: it’s the end of the workweek afterall! We get to enjoy dinners out with friends and family, head to the pub, go out dancing, or just have a quiet night at home with a bottle of wine and a movie.
While I definitely look forward to many of those things, too, another thing that caps off the week nicely is to catch up on all of the interesting technology news that took place. This week, Cisco had two networking announcements: one on the Cisco WAAS portfolio and the other regarding everyone’s favorite switch (Catalyst).
Let’s take a closer look at some of this week’s news highlights:
UPOE, or Universal Power over Ethernet, is the latest innovation from Cisco with broad, positive implications for many enterprise operations. We are not new at this. Cisco has been pushing the standards since 2000 for the incorporation of electrical power running on the same cable as data.
UPOE is a big milestone as we can now consolidate 60 watts on a single CAT5E cable. The flexibility that this enables cannot be overstated. Multiple third party vendors are jumping into the ecosystem here as dynamic environments using Virtual Desktops with integrated monitors, IP Turret systems for trading floors, not to mention building management, physical security and host of networking devices such as AP’s and compact switches that are often installed in very obscure locations.
The Catalyst 4500E is the initial beneficiary of this industry first for Cisco and this episode of TechWiseTV covers not just the use case and deployment examples as we go hands on with the big switch, but also a unique deep dive into understanding just how this works. A full appreciation for the engineering talent behind this innovation is warranted on this one when we go beyond the power negotiation and get into the physics of heat dissipation and other hurdles that had to be overcome. The latest innovations provide Catalyst 6500 customers with the capability to evolve their network infrastructure for the coming decade’s proliferation of connected devices, growth of video traffic, cloud computing business models and increasingly mobile workforces—without requiring “rip and replace” upgrades.
So, once again, Cisco continues to deliver business-enhancing innovation and investment protection for its customers – and with a platform that many had wrongly assumed was dead. Amongst the enhancements announced were:
- Yet another ‘industry first’ with seamless IPv4 and IPv6 support from the switch’s hardware platform
- New network virtualisation capabilities
- A comprehensive set of L4-7 integrated services modules and new application performance and visibility monitoring through a revamped implementation of NetFlow.
The real key though is the introduction of the highly anticipated Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Supervisor Engine 2T, a 2-terabit card that unlocks 80 gigabits per second per slot, new feature-rich 10-gigabit and 10-Gigabit Ethernet line cards, and next-generation borderless services that provide customers with new mobility, security, network analysis and load balancing capabilities.
The new supervisor engine provides a threefold increase on throughput capability. It can also quadruple the number of devices or users that can connect to a network. For example, a single Catalyst 6500 can now support up to 10,000 mobile devices.
All new line cards and the 2 Tbps supervisor are compatible with all Cisco E-Series chassis models, offering minimal intervention to the existing Catalyst 6500 E-Series infrastructure. This compatibility prevents rip-and-replace upgrades that jeopardize a customer’s network uptime and require additional personnel, expenses and time.
