Catalyst 4500E Supervisor 8-E now supports Converged Access with the IOS XE 3.7 release. The Supervisor 8-E is the latest generation high performance supervisor for Catalyst4500E and provides cutting edge features such as Service Discovery Gateway and support for SDN Openflow in addition to Converged Access and industry leading scale and performance. Miercom recently tested the performance of Supervisor 8-E and the report can be downloaded here. Since its launch, the Supervisor 8-E has become the highest selling supervisor in modular access and has been deployed by a large portion of the Catalyst 4500 install base.
The integrated wireless functionality for Converged Access on Supervisor 8-E is implemented through the same Unified Access Data Plane (UADP) ASIC as in the Catalyst 3850, so Catalyst 4500E customers who deploy Converged Access get the same field tested solution that has been deployed by thousands of Catalyst 3850 customers. Additionally, the Converged Access solution on Supervisor 8-E provides high availability (Access Point Stateful Switchover) and investment protection for wireless, which are the hallmark of the Catalyst 4500 platform. South Island School in Hong Kong is made up of students from around the world, with 1,400 students from over 35 countries. One value that sets the school apart is its commitment to using technology in the classroom. For instance, every student has a laptop that they use to access e-books, watch educational videos, and complete homework assignments. Some exams are even taken digitally.
With wireless devices used daily by every student and faculty member, a stable network connection is almost as important as pencil and paper in classrooms. South Island School’s existing Cisco network had reached end of life, and the school needed to refresh the infrastructure with a network that could meet bandwidth needs for years to come.
“We looked at other vendors, but we were extremely impressed with how the existing Cisco equipment performed over the years,” says Victor Alamo, ICT manager at South Island Schools. “By upgrading to the latest Cisco access points and switches, we’d have an infrastructure that would keep up with our needs.” Read More »

As more and more users and devices are connecting to the network via WiFi, Cisco has been focused on creating the best wired network to enable mission critical wireless:
- In 2013, we introduced Catalyst 3850 & 3650 Stackable Converged Access Switches for wired & wireless networks. These switches simplified networks by combining separate wired and wireless networks into a single platform. This simplification makes IT agile. These switches also enabled a better user experience through deeper application visibility across wired and wireless with Cisco Flexible NetFlow. Click here to see an interactive demo showing the other benefits of our converged access switches.
- In 2014, we expanded the converged access portfolio by introducing Converged Access on Catalyst 4500E, our lead modular access platform.
- Today, we take the next big step in our wireless strategy by introducing Cisco Catalyst Multigigabit technology across several campus switches: Catalyst 4500E, 3850 and 3560-CX.
So, what problem does Cisco Catalyst Multigigabit technology solve? Read More »

Cisco Live Cancun took place in the beautiful Moon Palace Golf & Spa Resort from November 3rd – 6th 2014. The event provided a great opportunity for customers and partners to discuss Cisco’s Products and Solution’s vision. And what better way to showcase these latest innovative solutions than with running the event itself with its very own innovation. That is exactly what had been done, as Converged Access supported Cisco Live from beginning to end.
Converged Access enables one common set of network capabilities and context-aware intelligence as it brings IOS excellence to wireless by extending wired infrastructure features like, resiliency, granular QoS and scalability to wireless clients. Converged Access was deployed at Cisco Live Cancun with 5 Catalyst 3850 Switches and 34 APs to support a peak of 450 concurrent users and a total of over 2,000 unique wired-wireless users.
