When someone mentions Power over Ethernet (PoE), what comes to your mind? If you are in IT, you may think about powering IP phones and wireless access points over the network. However, did you know that you can now power a whole new range of devices over the network with Cisco UPOE, including virtual desktop terminals, IP Turrets for financial trading, compact switches, personal telepresence systems, and more?
But how is this connected to saving energy?
Well, the infographic below shows the total number and types of devices that could be powered over the network with each iteration of PoE. If you take the time frame 2011 -- 2014 and all the new types of devices that can now be powered with Cisco UPOE, and manage these devices with Cisco EnergyWise, you get the equivalent of saving 2x the power output of Hoover Dam!
Cisco UPOE is available now on Cisco Catalyst 4500E Series Switches. The capability of Catalyst Compact Switches to get powered over UPOE is expected to be available in the next few months
