I will confess: this is not new – in fact we (quietly) first released such Fixed Price services back in 2009, to support the Cisco Unified Computing System deployments! – and if we’re honest, we’ve not talked much about them and how successful they’ve become, with many, many customers taking advantage of these quick-to-engage expert services.

The main branch office trend today, and really for the past 5 years, has been application and infrastructure centralization. Applications and services have been moving from the branch office to the data center, or the Cloud, and are being delivered over the WAN or the Internet. As a result, the branch office infrastructure – servers, storage devices, infrastructure software, and other components – are being displaced by much more optimized infrastructure in the data center.
Enterprise trends driving SDN and Network Programmability are becoming clearer. The skyrocketing number of virtual/cloud devices is making human configuration infeasible. A natural result will be that networks will move from being integrated based on physical box boundaries to being integrated based on software boundaries. Put another way, traditional box based network integration will be overwhelmed by device proliferation. Therefore businesses must adopt new approaches to device configuration and control. This will include a new layer of network software which will instantiate, orchestrate, and dismantle virtual networks.
Wow, time flies. When I started blogging at Cisco, 2 years back (here), helping organizations formulate their cloud strategy was top of my mind. I’d ran a customer market research survey, and one of the things we learned that in certain parts of the world, the access bandwidth to the cloud was a significant concern – in terms of reliability, cost and bandwidth available. From this customer feedback, we concluded that Cisco WAAS – Wide Area Application Services – that helps accelerate applications and optimizes bandwidth usage – was a key asset in helping our customers overcome this cloud adoption challenge. And from this feedback, we realised that our Cisco WAAS Planning and Design Services were key to some of our customers adopting cloud.
“You mean you can Facetime us from your camp site”, my daughter said incredulously. “From the middle of nowhere?” she continued. “You lot are mad!” OK she was more annoyed that I was taking our WiFi-only iPad away with me as I took some time out of my day job in Cisco Data Center Services, to participate in 2 stages of the Deloitte Ride Across Britain. Prior to the ride, I blogged about this challenge here, discussing the scale of the event and our target to raise money for Paralympic athletes. A nine day, 969 mile cycle over some of the most challenging terrain in Britain, the ‘Deloitte Ride Across Britain’ was an immense physical and mental challenge. From Saturday 8th September until Sunday 16th September (just passed), over 700 riders took part in this epic journey from Land’s End to John O’Groats. For the second year in a row, Cisco provided key technical support to the riders, so that they were able to focus fully on this enormous and exciting journey.
