What’s more important—time or money? What if you didn’t have to choose?

I was chatting with a colleague recently who was recounting her experience as a first-year engineer just out of school. It was a role that required designing and troubleshooting complicated networks—MPLS or ATM with intricate VPI/VCIs. Not being a technical person, the acronyms alone seemed daunting to me. But what became painfully obvious was the time and resource drain that is inherent when supporting a vast number of customers with needs that change on an ongoing basis. Without a standardized reference or blueprint, they were forced each time to create—and re-create—the wheel, over and over. It was clearly a problem in need of a solution—and an architectural one at that.

At Cisco, we’ve been talking about how Borderless Networks can transform your business—from the IT management side of things, and from the end-user experience perspective. But what helps make that a reality is the underlying architectural blueprint.

On Tuesday, October 19 at 8:00 a.m. PT, Cisco will host a live Internet TV broadcast and Q&A session to announce key findings from its Connected World Report. The study assesses the expectations, demands and behavior of employees as the lines between work and personal life continue to blur and new technologies make it possible to access information anytime, anywhere, with almost any device. The global research effort involved 2,600 end users and IT decision makers from a variety of industries in 13 countries. Read More »

What is a medianet?

Enterprises are starting to adopt all types of video usage to significantly increase worker productivity, improve collaboration, reduce costs, move towards Green IT by reducing their carbon footprint, streamline and optimize business operations. Adding new video services radically changes the demands on the network. Video consumes significantly more bandwidth than voice so over-provisioning in the network to avoid resource contention problems is not a viable option. Also, the requirement is not simply about the bandwidth, it is about rich service capabilities that must be enabled in the network; for example, how to protect multimedia sessions in progress against the risk of quality impairment due to intermittent extreme network conditions, and how to efficiently deliver one-to-many interactions. There is a need for the network to be aware and respond to the needs of a range of media and network applications.
