SBA for Government? – Yes, there’s an App for that!

It seems that every time I talk to customers and partners lately they want to know more about Smart Business Architectures.

I think we all agree that Networking has become quite complicated these days with many choices to be made.  Since most organizations rely on the network for every aspect of their business today, they need to provide an infrastructure that allows for anytime, anywhere, anything and anyone connectivity in a secure, reliable, and seamless fashion.

Poor choices can be extremely costly, and I’ve seen recent examples of customers having deployed the wrong technology (like GPON in a Campus environment) only to find that they were unable to provide the necessary Network services to support the applications that their customers demand.  This is not good for one’s career, nor the organizations budget when a forklift replacement of the network must be done.

Building and maintaining a network is complicated problem that can only be addressed properly with “a plan” or in network terminology, an “Architecture”.

The good news is that you don’t have to start from scratch.  Cisco has already done much of the baseline work for you with a number of very well written documents on the Smart Business Architecture (SBA) site.  Cisco has made a healthy investment in SBA to ensure our customers and partners are successful.

The SBA guides are very prescriptive and based on use cases from customers and partners and have been assembled and tested in our lab.  The target level of expertise is the CCNA/CCNP level engineer so you don’t have to keep a staff of CCIE’s to run your network, especially in the mid-size business environment where this is not a very cost effective approach.

If you’d like more detail, check out my talk on the subject recently at the Government Solutions Forum.

And oh by the way, yes there’s no an App on the Apple Store for “Cisco SBA”.  All you need is your CCO password to access all of the documents that are currently available.

How do they get hold of the right people to fix things if something goes wrong, and how can they say ‘I see what you mean now’ — and really mean it? My original blog gave lots of information.

Happy World IPv6 Day!

Around the world, organisations have been gearing up for World IPv6 Day – a widespread, global ‘test flight’ for IPv6.

Participants include technology providers like Cisco plus content providers and other industry players who will come together to enable IPv6 on their main websites for at least 24 hours.

Why now?
Earlier this year IANA announced that they had allocated the last remaining IPv4 addresses. At the same time, with changing regulatory requirements, more global organisations are having to more to IPv6.

In the meantime, we have a plethora of new devices appearing and more people than ever getting connected to the Internet worldwide.  For content providers, connecting to a global audience is a key factor driving the move towards IPv6.

So, what is Cisco doing to help customers? Our message to customers is very simple:

Preserve your current investment by auditing the existing system; then

Prepare by making a plan and starting a managed migration, even if only in one focused part of the network; this ensures one will

Prosper through the transition to a full IPv6-enabled Internet experience.

The Great Ike Borderless Networks Challenge Returns: The Security and Video Edition

With our last Borderless Challenge, more than 3,000 people jumped into the ring to participate; 30 individuals got all the answers right. And one lucky guy—Kevin B, a network engineer from Portland—earned a trip to Hawaii. Congratulations, Kevin!

In our newest challenge, we focus on Security and Video. Running from June 7 to June 28, the top prize winner will earn a trip to Cisco LIVE/Networkers in his/her choice of Acapulco, Mexico; Lima, Peru; or London. Other prizes include a Flip video camera or a Linksys Wireless Router.

To help us out, Jimmy Ray Purser and Robb Boyd will be dishing up a snack-sized edition of Techwise TV. They’ll provide an overview of three of our latest borderless innovations: ISE, a new centralized policy engine; Cisco Prime, which provides unified wired and wireless management; and Medianet, which automates the network for enhanced video and voice.

Watch this video to learn more about how you can participate.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Go to the contest site and register
  • Next, you’ll watch a mini TechWise TV episode focused on security and video
  • After that, you’ll watch another quick video. That one will feature our hero, Ike, applying his knowledge of borderless solutions to save the day.
  • And finally, you’ll take the challenge. That means responding to questions that test your knowledge of what you’ve learned through watching the two videos.

Manufacturing Automation: “Who’s Keeping the ‘Real Time’?”

Last week there were some people in the world who had to get their “stuff” in order, and there was no TIME to waste.    I imagine for some the daunting task of  contacting relatives and friends of years gone by, completing the last items on their bucket list, selling the house of 27 years, and putting out the last meal for Sparky was not a trivial task.   Why the state of urgency?  Well, for those of you not aware a man by the name of Harold Camping, Christian radio host, predicted the end of the world would occur on May 21, 2011 at 6 p.m. As a result, followers had to exhibit keen organizational skills, and the ability to synchronize and collaborate with various organizations, entities and persons.  They had to accomplish things in REAL TIME, in order to be “Ready.”

Well the rapture did not come, but it did prompt me to ponder the questions, “Who’s keeping the ‘Real Time?” and “What’s the ramifications as a result of capturing events in  real time, if any?

The term “real time” is the new paradigm of the 21st century.  Nations all over the world today are looking for ways to not only access and capture real time data and events, but leverage the information to build advance economies and increase value for its citizens. Every industry and field uses the term to identify opportunities for efficiencies and value.  For example, the financial industry provides us with ‘real time’ quotes, the news media supplies us with up to the minute ‘real time’ news, traffic and weather, and our government provides us with real time polling information.  The industry that has been most effected by this real time paradigm is manufacturing.  (Please Read More) Read More »
