Context-Aware, Cisco Borderless Networks Accelerate the Adoption of Cloud services
According to a recent Cisco Enterprise customer poll, 50% of those surveyed are interested in deploying some type of cloud infrastructure – whether it is public, private, or a hybrid. According to Forrester, (“Sourcing Groups Prepare For 2011 — Cloud Is Key Initiative 11/10”) Cloud adoption is already over 25% in North America, and continues to grow in Europe.
There are many reasons for migration to Cloud, including application portability on any device, business agility to deliver services and expand into new business models, and operational simplicity.
While many headlines talk about the Cloud, there is little mention of the role of the network in enabling Cloud services.
As organizations move to the cloud, and the varied devices and connection types accessing private and public cloud services, they become prone to malware or Web vulnerabilities. There’s also the risk of data loss. Ultimately, IT is faced with “can the network secure these connections, users, and data in a manner that ensures reliability and seamlessness?” It is no wonder that a Forrester blog cited that Security is the #1 barrier for cloud adoption.
Another concern is network performance. 83% of CIOs considered performance a top
concern for cloud services in an IDC Enterprise panel. Management of virtualization has also become more complex. According to an Enterprise Strategy Group study, 44% of IT consider virtualization to have a major impact on network and server management.

A 2 Terabit Supervisor that pushes the platform to new levels of performance and scalability with triple the switch fabric bandwidth and quadruple the scalability of the previous generation.
Six new line cards including the new 69xx Series that deliver 80 gigabit line rate, non-blocking performance as well as support for 40 gigabit Ethernet connectivity to handle future growth.
An array of service modules – WiSM 2 for wireless, ASA-SM for security, NAM-3 for network management at 10G speeds, and ACE-30 for load balancing – tightly integrating network services to lower complexity and simplify operations.

With its integrated Wi-Fi, 4G data, 720p HD video, and interoperability with Cisco TelePresence systems, not to mention its inclusion of one-click access to WebEx meetings and AppHQ, the new application ecosystem built specifically for Cius, the Cius can be a powerful tool that can help customers collaborate and work from remote locations, both seamlessly and securely.
The Cius enables multiple opportunities for partners to drive sales, offer professional services and expand their customer base, according to Richard McLeod, Cisco’s senior director of collaboration sales in the Worldwide Partner Organization. He says there are opportunities for partners to upgrade their customers’ networks, particularly since it cuts across Cisco’s technology architectures: Collaboration, Data Center and Virtualization, and Borderless Networks.
And that’s definitely what I heard when I chatted with Ken, as well as with Steve Reese, director of solutions marketing for partner Nexus IS, Inc., about their experiences using the Cius and selling it to customers. Ken and Steve also offered advice to partners looking to include in the Cius in their portfolio.
During our recent conversations around the benefits of an Enterprise Next-Generation Network (ENGN), the value of innovations such as Cisco EnergyWise has come up repeatedly.
Numerous global customers have reported back to us on the value of this feature in helping them to monitor, control and report on energy usage for IP-enabled devices. These customers include Brunel University in the UK. Thanks to Cisco EnergyWise, Brunel was able to achieve significant cost savings -- all from a feature that is available across Cisco’s Catalyst switches and doesn’t incur any additional expense!
This week, Lenovo became the latest member of the EnergyWise ecosystem – a group of over 80 partners working together with Cisco to allow customers to really maximize the impact of EnergyWise for their organizations.
The collaboration between Cisco and Lenovo will involve EnergyWise being natively supported on Lenovo ThinkPad laptops. ThinkPad laptops featuring EnergyWise include models of the ThinkPad Edge, L, R, T, X, W and SL Series laptops.
So, what does this actually mean for customers?
Customers with a Cisco network and Lenovo ThinkPad laptops will be able to use the management and monitoring services from Cisco EnergyWise to establish more customizable and accurate energy management policies to help save money during times of peak energy costs, as well as when PCs and other IT equipment are not in use.
According to Jeff Reed, vice president of Cisco’s Unified Access Business Unit, “Lenovo pre-integrating Cisco EnergyWise in their ThinkPad laptops enables our customers to expand the value of their Cisco network without installing any additional software. Now our Catalyst switching customers have a highly accurate PC energy management solution that delivers impressive energy savings at no extra cost.”
