On April 5th, 2011, Cisco participated in the Intel® Xeon® Processor E7 Product Family Announcement with NINE new world record performance benchmark results highlighting the Cisco Unified Computing System’s outstanding performance and IT productivity across key data center workloads. Cisco also announced the broadening of its server portfolio with the introduction of the Cisco UCS C260 enterprise server, an Intel Xeon processor E7 family based platform designed for most data demanding business critical IT challenges. The Cisco Unified Computing System’s outstanding performance benchmark results are highlighted in the Intel® Xeon® processor E7 Family-based Platform Performance Highlights (April 5, 2011) announcement.
Fundamentally, this record setting performance further reinforces the Cisco Unified Computing System’s ability to deliver next generation compute across bare-metal, high performance computing (HPC) and in the most complex virtualization and cloud computing environments in the data center. Did you hear about the Graph 500 at SC’10? You might not have. It got some fanfare, but other press releases probably drowned it out.
Even though it’s a brand new “yet another list”, it’s worth discussing because it’s officially a Good Idea. Here’s what Rich Murphy, Official Chief Graph 500 Cat Herder (ok, I might have made up that title), tells me about it:
Basically, what we’re trying to do is create a complementary measure to Linpack for data intensive problems. A lot of us on the steering committee believe that these kinds of problems will dominate high performance computing over the next decade. We’ve given some “business areas” as examples of these kinds of applications: cybersecurity, medical informatics, data enrichment, social networks, and symbolic networks. These basically exist to support the assertion that this could be huge someday.

This week our team is out in force at Oracle Open World in San Francisco, and with good reason. Last week Scott Ciccone and I talked about the kinds of applications that are particularly well-served (no pun intended) by the new UCS B230 blade. Yesterday, Oracle quantified what that means when they announced world-record results with the SPECjAppServer2004 benchmark, using a pair of B230s running Oracle WebLogic Server 11g, with our 4-socket B440 M1 acting as the database server.
I asked my colleague Girish Kulkarni, who works closely with our application partners, to help put this into context:
“We got the top dual-node SPECjAppServer2004 benchmark result of 11,283.80 JOPS@ Standard (jAppServer operations per second). This result surpasses the prior dual-node world record by 54 percent and was obtained running Oracle WebLogic Server 11g, Oracle Database 11g Release 2, and Oracle Enterprise Linux.”
