Cisco at Rockwell Automation Fair – Plant and IT Converged Networking

Last Fall Cisco was a major exhibitor at the Rockwell Automation Fair in Chicago. Rockwell Automation have just published a video where Kevin Davenport from Cisco (Cisco is a Rockwell Automation Strategic Alliance Partner), talks about the company’s Industrial Ethernet switch technology for a secure Ethernet  enabled factory, developed in collaboration with Rockwell Automation.

Access the Future of your Machine, Today

I read something the other day: today is the future’s past.

And I thought about that for a bit and decided to turn it around to machine builders. Today you deliver machines to end users that utilize your machines to make things. Tomorrow that end user will want more from that machine. How will you deliver it? Because if you don’t, you will really be in the past.

Part of the answer lies in Secure Remote Access. Part of it lies in trust between you and the end user (who by the way is your customer, if you haven’t figured that out).

Opening the Machine Network

So here we are. Last week was Automation Fair. What did you learn?

Oh, you didn’t go? Well, that is your loss, truly. A free show in Chicago where you could have learned about all sorts of new products and insights from Rockwell Automation and their network of partners, of which Cisco is a proud Alliance Partner. And you would have gotten free breakfast and lunch too!

Ok, in multiple booths we showed how one machine can integrate into another, and form a production line. Funny how that happens. We at Cisco are a part of ODVA, a trade association of many partners that subscribe to open standard networks.

We’re not going to crash? Do I really want to know? TMI!

A funny thing happened to me on the way to the fair. The Rockwell automation Fair that is.The Pilot comes on the intercom and says something like:

 “Hi, it’s the captain here. I want to tell you that we can’t get the flaps into the right position. We need number 15 and we can only get to 14.” (or he said something like that). “We’ve tried a few times and it doesn’t want to move.”

So we (the passengers) are all thinking: “What does that mean – are we going down?” Most of us don’t pilot planes so we don’t know how serious the situation is. We all agreed in our seating row that it was ‘TMI’ -- Too Much Information? I think he realized that, because he then said words to the effect of:
