Five Ways To Start Using Big Data

Just when we feel we are drowning in information, along comes Big Data to save the day. Big Data refers to a dataset so large it is beyond the capability of a typical database to manage and make use of the information. But a set of advances in hardware and software now allows us to rapidly capture, organize, and make sense of vast oceans of data, enabling us to apply the results to make better business decisions.

Big Data can give us a strategic advantage. For example, investors could see global trends in trading across sectors in near-real time; they could respond much earlier to a downturn in prices in a given sector, avoiding the steep losses incurred by taking later action.

Big Data can also create a richer experience for customers. Bloomberg.com gathers more than 100 data points from every page an individual reader views, processing the data with 15 algorithms to personalize recommendations. Algorithms that understand natural language and rich media and can reason make Big Data technology even more useful in decision making. Novel visualization paradigms, 3D, and gesture interfaces make Big Data understandable and accessible to everyone.

SBA for Government? – Yes, there’s an App for that!

June 9, 2011 at 9:22 am PST

It seems that every time I talk to customers and partners lately they want to know more about Smart Business Architectures.

I think we all agree that Networking has become quite complicated these days with many choices to be made.  Since most organizations rely on the network for every aspect of their business today, they need to provide an infrastructure that allows for anytime, anywhere, anything and anyone connectivity in a secure, reliable, and seamless fashion.

Poor choices can be extremely costly, and I’ve seen recent examples of customers having deployed the wrong technology (like GPON in a Campus environment) only to find that they were unable to provide the necessary Network services to support the applications that their customers demand.  This is not good for one’s career, nor the organizations budget when a forklift replacement of the network must be done.

Building and maintaining a network is complicated problem that can only be addressed properly with “a plan” or in network terminology, an “Architecture”.

The good news is that you don’t have to start from scratch.  Cisco has already done much of the baseline work for you with a number of very well written documents on the Smart Business Architecture (SBA) site.  Cisco has made a healthy investment in SBA to ensure our customers and partners are successful.

The SBA guides are very prescriptive and based on use cases from customers and partners and have been assembled and tested in our lab.  The target level of expertise is the CCNA/CCNP level engineer so you don’t have to keep a staff of CCIE’s to run your network, especially in the mid-size business environment where this is not a very cost effective approach.

If you’d like more detail, check out my talk on the subject recently at the Government Solutions Forum.

And oh by the way, yes there’s no an App on the Apple Store for “Cisco SBA”.  All you need is your CCO password to access all of the documents that are currently available.

Embarking on an Exciting Evolution: What Partners Need to Know

I’ve heard time and again from you (our partners) that we need to simplify, and make it easier to do business with us. Yesterday, we took a leap forward in streamlining Cisco.

Here are the three things I’d like to emphasize about the changes we announced on May 5.

1)    Simplicity.

I promised you at Partner Summit in New Orleans that we would simplify. Yesterday we followed through on that pledge by streamlining our sales, services, and engineering organizations at Cisco.

2)    Profitability.

My top priority is your profitability. We will continue to innovate and invest in industry leading programs like VIP and OIP. And, together we will drive growth and profitability in five key areas:

•    core  (routing, switching, and services)
•    collaboration
•    data center, virtualization, and cloud
•    video
•    architectures

New Architectural Specializations for Cisco Partners: Borderless, Data Center, Collaboration

At Partner Summit 2011, Edison Peres, SVP WW Channels, described architectures as being the house, with individual solutions being the rooms in that house.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BbVPCavN1U

Today we are evolving our channel partner program with architecture specializations: Borderless Networks Architecture Specialization, Collaboration Architecture Specialization, and Data Center Architecture Specialization.

Architectures present massive opportunities for Cisco and its channel partners – borderless networks alone have a $49 billion total addressable market opportunity in FY11, collaboration $35 billion in CY11, and data center/virtualization is $42 billion in FY11.

To capture market opportunities that lie ahead, we must evolve towards architectures together.  And here’s how we’ll do it.

What Do Cloud, Twitter, and Virtual Partner Summit Have in Common?

I’ve often said that the boundaries between work and life are blurring. I use Twitter every day to collaborate, talk with friends and engage in conversations I don’t normally have in the natural course of my business day.  It’s amazing to send out a tweet and to have people react immediately.

And while technology lets us send a single tweet to people around globe, it has other fantastic benefits, too—it also lets us attend a conference without having to even board a plane.

Join me at Cisco’s Virtual Partner Summit March 1-3, 2011 to see live keynotes, breakout sessions that will help you prepare a customer for a cloud solution, and a chance to ask me and other Cisco executives questions during live video chats. (All without having to leave home.) Register today.

Want to hear more about the topics that are top-of-mind for me as I head into Partner Summit?
