Test & Verify. How often is this ‘really’ be done in networking?
After learning more about what can be done here, I really feel like more people should be taking advantage of this.
The idea of building a fully virtualized version of your existing or desired network so you can see how your applications (and the network itself) will act and react in various situations, is like a wonderful dream of ‘never leave the chair’ goodness. This is immensely helpful and cost effective when compared to the amount of equipment historically required.

A few weeks ago when we announced the Cisco APIC Enterprise Module, in response to a post by Cisco VP Jeff Reed, David had quite a lengthy comment to which I’d like to respond. His specific question (within the full comment) was:
Do you see an upside for more value-added offerings — beyond the current anticipated cost-savings debate about the promise of SDN/NFV technologies?
First, thank you David for your questions. In short, Yes. At Cisco we see a lot of value in offering services to our Enterprise customers and also to our partners who offer managed services to their customers. Let me expand on this.
Cisco is fully aware of the emerging market segments with the still nascent SDN technology adoption. As you say, larger telcos and cloud service providers are looking at SDN/NFV with open hardware assessments and are more interested in scaling their deployments of multi-tenancy architectures. Whereas small and medium sized enterprises are evaluating SDN with a more application-centric approach. The main concern, given their modest investment infrastructure, (compared to the telcos and cloud service providers) is about having agile IT that can respond quickly to their business needs. The small and medium sized-business (SMB) commercial-services market is important for all types of service providers (SPs). SMBs account for more than half of total U.S. commercial-services spending, according to AMR Research/Gartner. And, the portion of the U.S. SMB commercial-services market that service providers could capture is expected to grow to more than $200 billion by 2015, according to analysis by Cisco Consulting Services (CCS) and industry research analysts.
To capture this opportunity, service providers need a deeper understanding of who the SMB customers are and what they buy, as well as how they purchase these commercial services. To better understand SMBs’ detailed service delivery needs and expectations, Cisco Consulting Services (CCS), surveyed 761 U.S. SMBs with five to 1,000 employees in 2012. The study revealed that although this is a big and complex market, there are specific opportunities for SPs in cloud and advanced services.

Over the past couple of years the conversation about Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) and converged networks (e.g., Unified Fabric) has become more and more sophisticated. While I still get the occasional “what is FCoE?” question, and still have to correct the occasional journalist who insists FCoE runs over TCP/IP (it doesn’t!), those conversations are becoming more rare.
Instead, the conversation has shifted from the “what is this?” to “how do I do it?” All the diagrams and napkins in the world can’t predict or prepare for the wide-ranging possibilities that customers have in their data centers.
