SP360: Service Provider

The telecommunications industry has seen a huge amount of change over the past decade, and carrier US Signal is a perfect example.  Originally a wholesale and business carrier offering basic transport services from T1 to OC48, US Signal has recognized the need to move up the value chain if they are going to continue to provide maximum value to their customers. This transformation has been important as it seeks new markets and offers services, which are unique and provide greater profit potential than generic transport.

US Signal starts from a strong foundation. Today they operate one of the largest resilient fiber optic networks in the Midwest with over 1100 route miles in 23 metro markets and over 11,000 route miles of long-haul fiber. Recently they completed a successful evaluation of the first 100 Gigabit (100G) coherent dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) trial based on the the Cisco ONS 15454 Multiservice Transport Platform (MSTP) system.

What was compelling is that this 100G coherent trial was performed over an in-service 10G-engineered network (the actual locations were Chicago, Illinois. and Kalamazoo, Michigan). Based on the outcome US Signal will be able to deploy in-service, 100G coherent technology on networks originally designed for 10G transmission without any re-engineering, thereby extending the value and return on investment of the company’s existing  flexible (ROADM based) fiber network.

In addition to wavelength services US Signal also offers Ethernet connectivity which they brand as Virtual Ethernet, and IP/MPLS virtual private networks. They’ve deployed the Cisco ASR 9000 as one of their Carrier Ethernet platforms, for high capacity, high resiliency, and robust support for IPv6.

Most recently they’ve made the jump to the cloud, and now have a managed data center offering, consisting of dedicated resource pools designed to rapidly provision and host virtual private servers and geographically diverse utility storage. Customers can choose from virtual private server templates or custom-built virtual private servers with a la carte CPU core, memory and storage options. This addition makes US Signal one of the first service providers in the Midwest to offer customers the opportunity to build Virtual Private Cloud environment (and we think there is a lot of growth in cloud networking – check out our new Global Cloud Index).

At Cisco, we’re excited to see our customers leverage our solutions to offer the services their customers demand, whether they be 100G wavelengths or virtual server resources.

A heartfelt thank you to US Signal for placing their continued confidence in us.
