Today we announced our collaboration with Red Bee Media, an international media management company, to offer broadcasters and media companies the means to provide TV and other kinds of digital media through streaming video players and VOD portals.
That’s kind of a mouthful. Allow me break it down into my top three reasons why this is one of the more exciting deals I’ve had the good fortune to be involved with:
- Red Bee is cool, --plain and simple. Those who hang out on the U.S. side of the Atlantic may not have heard much about Red Bee Media before, so let me explain it this way: Imagine going to another country to hang out with your new colleague, who knows everybody and is doing all the coolest stuff in video. Red Bee is that kind of partner. They’re a highly respected TV and media aggregator in Europe, and especially the U.K. For instance, of the five major broadcasters there, Red Bee provides the online portal and client. They’re creative and connected and fun, which is a great combination.
- It positions us right where we were aiming, in terms of “cloud” and “client” for online video. In the arrangement, we’re providing a “Software as a Service” (SaaS) component, plus a white-labeled “soft client” that Red Bee can brand as they wish for its clients. SaaS is a hosted cloud thing; “soft client” is in essence an online video player.
- It validates our Videoscape plans. If you spend much time with we “Cisco people”, chances are that you’ve heard us mention Videoscape a few times. Videoscape is the integration of cloud, network, and client, so as to deliver a more immersive consumer experience. Our partnership with Red Bee contains all three components.
So, all in, what’s the buzz about us and Red Bee? It’s that they’ll use our Videoscape software suite, to be their online engine. For a video guy eagerly watching the connected device horizon, it’s all very exciting!
