ACG Hot Seat Session on the CRS-3

Ray Mota, co-founder of ACG Research, recently spoke with Suraj Shetty, VP of Worldwide Service Provider Marketing and noted contributor to SP360 (and since he is my boss, let me add, a gentleman of the finest character, strength and intellect). The interview was part of Ray’s Hot Seat series, likely named more for the nature of the questions than for any heating coils in the furniture, but to be honest, I can’t confirm that.

In the interview, they not only dive into details of the CRS-3 which we launched just a few months ago, but also discuss everything from its single-flow architectural approach, in-service upgrade capabilities, investment protection, scale and power to Data Center relevance and the market opportunity ahead.

IPoDWDM is Crossing the Chasm

Cisco IPoDWDM solutionThe survey results are in. They confirm that service providers are ready to go mainstream with IP over DWDM (IPoDWDM). More than half of the respondents plan to deploy IPoDWM within a year. Eventually over 85% of them will do so beyond 2012. Infonetics Research carried out a global survey recently on packet-optical convergence technologies for routers including IPoDWDM, OTN and others. It published the findings for its clients on July 16th under the ‘Carrier Routing Switching and Ethernet’ Continuous Research Service.

The motivation for developing IPoDWDM for us was simple. By integrating colored optics as interfaces within routers, providers could reduce the need for external optical-electrical-optical (OEO) transponder racks, cross connects and SONET/SDH switching layers. This dramatic network simplification resulted in lesser number of devices in the network, thus lowering maintenance, power, cooling and rack-space operational expenses. Additionally, routers now had direct visibility into layer 1 optical transport network (DWDM) leading to innovative resiliency features like Proactive Protection.
