Widely deployed from the core to the edge, IP/MPLS has achieved huge success as a mature, standards-based technology now deployed by virtually every service provider worldwide. As a result, the industry has chosen to extend IP/MPLS and develop a transport profile called MPLS-TP (MPLS Transport Profile). MPLS-TP is the packet transport technology of choice being developed by the IETF to allow service providers to cost effectively migrate existing transport networks to packet based solutions.
Recently EANTC conducted an MPLS-TP Interoperability Event which focused on testing and demonstrating interoperability of key IP/MPLS and Carrier Ethernet features between multiple vendor platforms. This represented a critical technology demonstration for service providers as they begin their migration to packet transport networks.
Several vendors came together to show their platforms conforming to this standard and ensuring interoperability with each other. Cisco tested its end to end portfolio and architecture for next generation packet transport networks including our new Carrier Packet Transport (CPT) family of P-OTS products combined with the ASR 9000, 7600 series and Cisco Premier Intergrated Management Experience (Prime ). This event -- the second one in six months -- confirmed that the technology is growing and ready for adoption. Service providers can deploy with confidence - especially because MPLS-TP is based on and is an extension of existing IP/MPLS standards. By combing MPLS-TP with IP/MPLS and enabling one end-to-end OAM architecture, service providers can realize operational efficiency and leverage a truly converged and seamlessly interoperable architecture.
