Making a Dent in the 21st Century: Women and Technology
Let me start out by saying that I love technology and am passionate about getting people, particularly women, excited about choosing a career in technology. My own career path in technology had commenced with a focus on computer networking, and now amongst my various technical initiatives, I am looking at how Machine-to-Machine communications and eHealth can contribute to assisted living cases. The latter example, is more poignant to me as my mother–my hero–has been struggling with Stage IV breast cancer, and, continues to follow my numerous achievements whilst asserting “that nothing is impossible, Monique.”
“Nothing is impossible” has been my modus operandi in anything I do especially in technology and in pursuing technical paths where people stated that you cannot.
On July 27, 2012, I had the pleasure to attend the Women@theFrontier venue on “Design the Future 2012”: and to meet the most amazing women from a variety of backgrounds who are exponentially making a difference in this world and using technology to do so.
I noted that in this backdrop at NASA Ames, scientist and astronaut Dr. Sally Ride had just passed away on July 23 2012. Dr. Ride was passionate about science and in stimulating that passion in school, Kindergarten to- 12th grade knowing that inspirational teachers do make a difference in shaping the path of a potential technologist.
Ping Fu, CEO of Geomagic, a leading provider of 3D software of creating digital models for digital objects [yes she wore platform shoes and a necklace that she had designed with her 3D software] stated at the July 27, 2012 event, rather than moving upward to an artificial glass ceiling, why not move forward, just move forward!
I find it even more relevant that Coke CEO, Muhtar Kent, that the 21st century is for women and offers the statistics to validate his assertion:
I am here to tell you that not only Geek is Chic but that collectively as technologists and in the 21st century, we can certainly make that dent in the universe, so please join me in doing so!
