The Color of Money

Watch: How Cisco Enables the Green Service ProviderHappy Earth Day, everyone!  Today is about honoring nature and about examining our lives in the hopes that we’ll live them in more environmentally responsible ways.

Some of you may be asking that in the midst of the financial challenges facing service providers and enterprises, is the topic of “green” really relevant or more of a band-wagon theme?  From Cisco’s perspective, it is very relevant - on a number of fronts.  As one service provider told me as we were comparing the dramatically reduced carbon emissions/power consumption of our ASR 9000 platform to competitive offerings said, “I like helping the environment, but I really like helping our bottom line.”

Thanks to modern technical innovations, what’s good for the environment can also be good for business.  In fact, more and more service providers are viewing their efforts to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions as important ingredients in their efforts to reduce operating costs.  Verizon Wireless is a top-of-mind example.

To this end, Cisco is committed to helping service providers deliver more sustainable solutions. By designing and building more environmentally sensitive technologies that enable greater efficiencies in networks - lowering both capex and opex - we work with service providers to extend and expand both those financial and environmental benefits, so one doesn’t necessarily have to be sacrificed to accomplish the other.

Check out these short videos to learn more about how Cisco is working to make every connection a green connection.

Another way that Cisco enables sustainable service providers is through our work with standards bodies and non-governmental organizations, like ATIS and the ITU.  As my colleague, Mike Capuano, points out, this important work will ensure that network efficiency - and environmental responsibility - remains a requirement for doing business.

The net result of intentionally building more sustainable devices and solutions is that it flat-out makes financial and “earth stewardship” sense.

So, even in the face of daunting economic and the environmental challenges, working together as partners to our service provider customers, we’ll be driving our innovation to address these problems with an eye towards sustainability and on leaving this planet in good shape for our future CCIE’s.

Green is good.
