Cablevision Deploy’s North America’s Fastest Consumer Broadband Service - Built on Cisco DOCSIS 3.0

Cablevision offering fastest broadband speeds in North America
Just this week, Cablevision announced it has taken a bold step towards accelerating the global competitiveness of the U.S. market in broadband speeds while delivering consumers a rich platform for service innovation. In their press release, Cablevision stated that they are offering the fastest broadband speeds in North America - 101 Mbps downstream, for less than $100 per month. As consumers, we should be thrilled by the prospects of faster broadband - both downstream and upstream - to enable highly personalized and interactive services. Applications like session shifting, network PVR, consumer TelePresence and video on-demand libraries from on-net and off-net content can now all be delivered in HD. These types of applications are at the heart of what medianet aspires to deliver. Cisco is providing its DOCSIS 3.0 solution based on the uBR10012 CMTS and DPC-3000 cable modems to enable this ground-breaking service.

For cable operators, DOCSIS 3.0 is more than just a platform for faster speeds and new consumer services. The extra capacity and efficiency is opening up opportunities for new business services like TelePresence, Webex and Unified Communications to enable new service markets. While Telcos have their fiber based deployments that promise super-fast speeds, cable operators have DOCSIS 3 that can enable 300Mbs+ downstream and 100Mbs+ upstream off the existing HFC plant. So I say, who needs fiber to deliver the next generation of services?

The DOCSIS 3.0 deployment with Cablevision is the culmination of our efforts to build technology that can accelerate mass market adoption of DOCSIS 3.0. When we developed our ‘D3’ solution, we asked ourselves the following question:  “How do we enable a targeted, non-disruptive, scalable, efficient and ‘build-as-you-grow’ solution that optimizes CapEx and OpEx for the cable operator?” Our mantra became “Faster. Better. Cheaper.” Delivering on that promise was the single-minded focus of the DOCSIS 3.0 program. As a result, we have managed to increase CMTS capacity to 10X what it was when the uBR10012 was introduced while cutting down cost per bit by 5X…and even more improvements are on the way. These advances are making new services not only possible but cost-effective.

It’s a great day to be a consumer and an American as we witness progress that takes us from being 15th in the world on broadband speeds towards one of the premier nations delivering competitive broadband speeds to its constituents.
