4G mobile Internet is back in the news with word that Apple has sold over 5 million LTE-enabled iPhone 5s in the first three days it went on sale, and I know that my wife is counting down the hours until she is eligible for an upgrade (likely my two-year old daughter too… if she could talk. Have you seen how kids naturally master an iPhone like Ronaldhino and soccer ball?).
Whether it’s for uploading pictures of the kids to social media sites or getting work done faster, over 100 million smartphone users will belong to the "gigabyte club" (over 1 GB per month) in 2012 according to the Cisco Visual Networking Index. However this rapid expansion of the mobile Internet challenges network operators who must determine how to move this deluge of data traffic from the cell tower and/or Wi-Fi hotspot back to the core of the network. A virtual “Category [iPhone] 5” for some providers…
For this application Cisco designed the Cisco ASR 901 router, an environmentally hardened very low-power platform optimized for mobile backhaul requirements, including those found in emerging markets. Using Cisco ASR 901 routers, services providers can minimize operating costs while increasing coverage of their Radio [RAN] and Ethernet access networks. Key innovations in the ASR 901 include its low power consumption (less than 40 watts), ability to backhaul using 10GE links, and sophisticated timing-over-packet technology.
The Cisco ASR 901 has already racked up multiple design wins with several large mobile operators, including one in North America. Most recently it picked up an industry award for Most Innovative Product of the Year at The Economic Times Telecom Awards 2012. The award was presented to Cisco in New Delhi, in the presence of Kapil Sibal, Minister of Human Resource Development, Communications & IT- Government of India, and other leaders and dignitaries from the industry.
This is actually the second significant recognition for the ASR 901, firmly establishing it as a break-through product in this space. Earlier this year, the product received the NASSCOM Innovation Award in the New Technology Advancement category.
Speaking on the occasion, Partho Mishra, Vice President & General Manager, Provider Access Business Unit, Cisco Systems, said:
“We are extremely proud to receive the ET Telecom Award. This is a reflection of our commitment to innovate and provide the right technology solutions and platforms to help customers meet changing business needs. This is also a testament to Cisco's investment in developing innovative products for India and from India, for the rest of the world. The ASR 901 is a fantastic product and it's good to have that acknowledged by our peers and the industry at large".
If you’d like to see the ASR 901 in person and need a reason to visit Las Vegas, come visit our booth #109 at the TelcoTV event October 24-26th 2012. We’ll have the ASR 901 along with a number of other Cisco solutions!
