It’s been a whirlwind week for the Cisco Social Media Business Group. We completed a 2-month, internal core course series, that included over 30 introductory to advanced level offerings for employees. - Creating a solid social media training program can affect so many key areas of the business from making social efforts much more scalable to protecting the brand’s reputation to creating a common framework.
- By defining social media training goals upfront, organizations can empower employees to use these skills more effectively for the overall business strategy and maximize resources.
- Social media training does not have to cost a lot of money to create. However, there are key considerations to keep in mind before developing the curriculum and tools: set up logistics, content creation, delivery and dissemination, and program management. Bandwidth and internal expertise are often the biggest factor.
- A successful social media training curriculum includes a variety of learning formats (e.g. classes, hands-on labs, etc.), growth levels, and solid supplementary resources and tools.
- Make social media training inclusive allowing employees and contractors at all levels to participate. At the same time, be realistic about the number of audiences and types of training the team can offer and pace the program implementation accordingly.
- Provide a mix of foundation and application curriculum topics to keep participants engaged over time.
- Look for new trends, assess continuously, and keep audience needs in mind throughout the entire planning and implementation cycles.
- Using incentives such as badges, points, certifications, encouragements or other rewards will motivate participants to stick with the curriculum, feel a sense of accomplishment, and provide career recognition.
While starting a social media training program can feel like a daunting task, with the proper analysis, planning, goals, and support, it can make a large difference in the way employees use this communication channel for both their own use and for the brand’s overall reputation!
