Not to sound overly cheesy, but time really does fly! I can’t believe it’s already August. In two weeks, I’ll be folding clothes and packing up to go back down to humid, hurricane-season New Orleans for school.
Until then, I have a few more intern adventures in the business world. My latest exploration took me to Oracle, a company known for its data base management systems. To communicate its news, Oracle has the Press Room, an online press center similar to those of HP and EMC. There’s a banner area at the top of the home page that highlights three recent major press releases. The center of the home page features more routine releases in chronological order.
However, after clicking on the press releases, there doesn’t seem to be any way to share them individually via social media. There are the “Big Three” social network channels available for fans, followers and viewers on the home page, but that’s about it when it comes to amplifying press releases. RSS feeds are also used to distribute content and there’s a newsletter you can sign up for. There is also a News section right above the various social networks that details Oracle’s acquisition of Sun from a couple of years ago. Oracle has developed its own social media tool though, which is called Oracle Mix.
Oracle Mix is essentially a blog and discussion forum for Oracle employees, who are encouraged to share insights on work and personal activities. Oracle Mix has more than 75,000 members so far, so it seems to be working. It isn’t exactly close to the level of Facebook, but it is good for intra-office communication. The idea of an intra-office social network is a new one, and although it may not be completely relevant to distributing news and content, it is good for sharing content internally. You do not just have to be an Oracle employee to join either–as long as you have a valid email address you can create a profile. I think this would also be a great networking tool for people that are interested in working at Oracle.
Oracle’s Press Room is a great tool for getting straightforward press releases from the company. However, rather than just relying on Oracle Mix to encourage employees and other members to share content, it may be more effective to have buttons on the landing page for each individual press release.
