Adventures as an Intern: the EMC Social Media Newsroom
The site follows a traditional corporate newsroom with content that is primarily focused on EMC products and services. Social Media Newsroom houses press releases, news stories on the company, video podcasts and blogs on separate tabs in the middle of the home page. The video podcast tab features three different YouTube channels: Events, a Video Forum that includes whiteboard talks as well as videos shared by EMC employees, and Software. These video channels let readers interact with different aspects of the company. By using YouTube to host the video channels, EMC is able to reach a larger audience with catchy, short videos, even if the company isn’t necessarily marketing its products to a consumer audience.
The blog section of EMC’s newsroom features three executives at the company, although readers can find many more bloggers by clicking the View All Bloggers link. The featured execs came up with quirky names like Virtual Geek and The Storage Anarchist for their blogs. Each blogger provides a different perspective into different areas of the business. Three new blogs are featured each week.
Like the majority of corporate newsrooms, the Social Media Newsroom also provides links to social media channels. By just clicking a button on the homepage, you can become a fan of EMC on Facebook, follow the company on Twitter, watch videos on the YouTube Channel, and participate in FriendFeed, a syndication of various social media feeds that EMC uses. EMC also created its own community of over 340 sharing devices, which include more common networks such as Facebook and Digg, and different content-sharing sites such as Delicious and StumbleUpon.
EMC has stuck with the traditional layout of the corporate newsroom, but still manages to incorporate various aspects of social media so that content can be easily shared by readers and also keeps the content fresh and relevant. EMC’s newsroom highlights third-party news content that focuses solely on the company. Content on industry trends is not included on the site.
As this week comes to a close, it’s really hit me how fast my internship has already flown by. I’m approximately halfway through the summer program already! Not to worry though, I’ll keep my blog up as long as you are reading it and sharing it. (Hint, hint). See you next week for another installment of Adventures of an Intern!Tags:
