The role of the CIO is changing so fast these days that you can hardly catch your breath. No longer can the chief information officer focus on maintaining the traditional IT infrastructure. Now it’s about the proliferation of devices and how they can help to build your business.

Almost 500 million smartphones were sold worldwide last year, according to IDC and Gartner; in the US alone, 46% of US mobile users have a smartphone (Nielsen). CEOs want these mobile users as customers, creating new revenue streams with online apps and services. Watch Andre Kindness, Forrester analyst, discuss the need to assess and understand the business to deliver a superior mobile user experience.

Analysts also say that by 2015, there will more than 212 million mobile workers in the Americas alone, using 3.5 billion networked devices daily. These employees want to use their own personal smart phones and tablets inside their corporate network to conduct business. According to the Cisco Connected World Technology Report, 77% of young workers say that they rely on multiple devices and 33% use at least three devices for work.

Yet a company also needs to operate a network that meets standards for security, collaboration, and compliance. Andre Kindness of Forrester Research points out the key issues for reaching these seemingly contradictory goals:

  1. Create a new type of architecture infrastructure that is flexible and dynamic enough to handle all the devices that today’s mobile world demands.
  2. Understand what your business needs, using a economic impact methodology to balance total cost of ownership against return on investment to define the value to your organization.
  3. Measure the weaknesses that can be addressed by adding mobility into your network: Where can employees get the information they need to react rapidly to customer needs, how can applications be accelerated, new customers be reached?

It’s a new day and a new lifestyle for today’s CIOs.
