The UK is recognized these days as a leader in moving government to the cloud. Through its G-Cloud Programme, Government Digital Service, and other initiatives, the British government is making the effort to put technology innovation at the heart of the public sector.

Such large-scale projects are not easy, since the public sector of any country does not consist of a single entity. Instead, it is composed of hundreds of departments and organizations, with an infrastructure that is constantly growing and changing to keep up with the times. The result is a lack of flexibility and cost efficiency.

The cloud has the potential to change all that. It enables cross-department economies of scale that allow governments access to legacy information and applications while continuing to innovate to support mobile devices, virtualization, and collaboration. The cloud enables the Government of the Future – combining old and new information to more efficiently service its citizens.
