Suzanne Hansen leads the Cisco Australia and New Zealand marketing team from Auckland, New Zealand. She is living the dream which collaboration innovations help enable.
Watch her video of tips for managing a team from across the Tasman as well as reading Suzanne’s background below:
While I am living the dream which collaboration tools provide, let me be very clear: Collaboration technology is an enabler, but success in a remote management situation requires consistent and transparent leadership practices.
For some background, I lead the Cisco Australia and New Zealand marketing team. I currently have 11 staff based in Sydney, and another in Melbourne, Australia and just one colleague with me in Auckland. I also have key stakeholders in Hong Kong, Auckland and Sydney, plus I’m a very active member of various virtual teams across the region, Asia Pacific and the US.
The Cisco Australia and New Zealand marketing team is a high performance team with a set of strong and creative individuals with a fairly diverse spectrum of experience and even more diverse personalities. This makes leading this team, from any geographical proximity, a challenge. But by applying intuitive leadership principles and heavy use of collaborative technologies, remote leadership has not just been possible, but very successful.
