A (U.S.*) Thanksgiving tradition in many households is to go around the dinner table and have everyone state what they are thankful for.  As we enter the twilight of 2010, I thought that it is a good time to reflect on what I am thankful for at Cisco.

Here is my (decidedly) Cisco-centric list…in reverse order (David Letterman “Top 10 List” style):

#10 – Quality of Life.  We have the technology to make it easy and productive to work from anywhere at any time.  Broadband was the first step.  Collaborative technology is the second.  And, now, pervasive video makes it quite seamless indeed.  This could also easily be the #1 reason I am thankful to be at Cisco.

#9 – Teamwork.  Two heads are better than one.  We have a collaborative culture and that makes success much sweeter.

#8 – Fun.  We have fun at Cisco.  While it may sound trite: if you aren’t having fun, why are you doing it?

#7 – Diversity.  Diversity makes us stronger.  Diversity of thinking, background, geography, products and more

#6 – Empowerment.  Cisco was just recognized as the best employer in all of Canada.  One of the reasons stated was because we empower employees to do their job.  It may be tough to get into Cisco (I, for instance, interviewed with 11 different people), but once you are hired, we trust you as a professional to do your job.

#5 – Our competitors.  What?  Having great competition validates that we are in the right markets.  We have strong competitors up and down our product portfolio and it pushes us to innovate and deliver better technology for our customers.  Thank you, competitors.

#4 – Our shareholders.  We thank our shareholders for investing their trust and money in our vision of changing the way the world works, lives, learns and plays.

#3 – Our partners.  Our partners make us better.  It is that simple.

#2 – Cisco employees.  For our 25th anniversary, we challenged Cisco employees to volunteer an aggregate of 25 years of volunteering (200,000 hours).  We volunteered over 220,000 hours. Giving back to our communities is very important to us!

And, the number 1 reason to give thanks at Cisco:

#1 – Customers.  We know we don’t exist if we don’t deliver what our customers want and need, so we are most thankful for our customers.

Please add what you are thankful for…in life…or work…Cisco and non-Cisco.  And, Happy Thanksgiving.

*Canadian Thanksgiving too?

  21. Not to belittle your Vision Statement, but it sounds like Corporate ‘pap.’ I worked for two separate F100 firms when I was in Corporate America. Although these ‘top ten’ are laudable, they are not all created equal. There is something called profitable revenue growth that trumps all.
    Thx

  23. I would love to thanks CISCO because their blogs inspired me to start a new venture “Extranet World”. CISCO is great knowledge source for me and would love to implement Collaboration & Telepresence platforms in coming years.I love watching CISCO Videos and appreciate the work of social media managers of CISCO. Inspired by CISCO TV on youtube, i have started my Technology Videos Channel on youtube, with the name Onlinemorning. I love to participate in contests like “What i wish my TV could do?” for Technology Giant.
In future, i would love to innovate new creative things combining objectives of CISCO and Google.

  24. I have been peering up CISCO VoIP telephones for years now. I just love them. They are great! The voice quality is really good and they have a good feel to them. I also like them as a technician. They program easy and peer up with no nonsense. I am sure CISCO will continue to put out great products and evolve in the VoIP market.

  25. John, you are quite right about being thankful. People in most of the worlds are oppressed and unable to educate themselves via WWW. We are truly blessed. If you have a roof over your head, can eat three meals a day, can practice your religion without being persecuted and have spare change in your pocket, you are part of the worlds most elite people,The top 2%. We are blessed.

  27. As a Cisco shareholder for many years, I’m amused that my last comment is still waiting moderation. Corporate America employees are so afraid to ‘rock the boat’ with a slightly uncomplimentary comment. :)
