Yankees take Cisco out to their New Ballpark!

It’s been a big day for news at Cisco. In addition to our ASR9000 launch, we unveiled an extra special new customer in New York this morning. Amid a sea of flashbulbs and camera shutters, Cisco CEO, John Chambers and sports practice VP, Ron Ricci, joined New York Yankees executive vice president, Hal Steinbrenner and COO, Lonn Trost for a press conference in Manhattan at which we announced that the new Yankee Stadium, set to open April 2009, will be outfitted with state-of the art Cisco technologies. A new Cisco connected sports technology called StadiumVision™ will be central to the fan experience at the new ballpark. In addition to broadcasting live game footage, StadiumVision will be capable of simultaneously providing up-to-date sports scores, Yankees trivia, news and weather via more than 1100 IPTV monitors throughout the stadium. At the conclusions of games, these monitors will allow the Yankees to direct patrons to the nearest exits and provide up-to-the-moment traffic information. StadiumVision is one of a host of technologies from Cisco that will make the new Yankee stadium the most technologically advanced game-day experience in baseball. In addition to StadiumVision, the new Yankee Stadium will feature premium luxury suites outfitted with touch-screen Internet Protocol (IP) phones that will allow fans to order concessions and Yankees merchandise for delivery to the suite. The new stadium has also been designed with an eye to the future. It will be equipped to support future fan use of mobile devices for ordering concessions from their seat, viewing instant replays or chatting real-time with other friends inside and outside the Stadium. ABCNews: Innovative Programs Give Vets a 2nd Chance

On this Veterans Day in the U.S., I wanted to highlight this story by ABCNews’ Bob Woodruff about injured vets coming home and one of the programs created for them. It is is called the Transition Training Academy and was created by the U.S. Department of Labor, the Naval Medical Center, Cisco, and the Wounded Warrior Project to train wounded veterans in computer IT support.Woodruff reports, “(t)o ensure that these service members succeed, the Department of Labor recently created a Web site called America’s Heroes at Work, which addresses the employment challenges that face those living with the wounds of war. The courses taught at the TTA are tailored to the specific educational needs of the wounded service members.”Our hats are off to our veterans this day and every day for their selfless service.

Cisco is Leader in Gartner Magic Quadrant for Unified Communications

Earlier this year Cisco took the #1 spot in enterprise voice and the #1 spot in enterprise telephony. I guess good news also comes in threes because, the recently published Gartner Magic Quadrant for Unified Communications* positioned Cisco in the Leaders quadrant. According to Gartner, “The Leaders quadrant contains vendors selling comprehensive and integrated UC solutions that directly or, with well-defined partnerships, address the full range of market needs. What do Portugal, broadband and small businesses have in common?

You likely read about our small business networking announcement yesterday. We unveiled a global initiative and a $100 million investment focused on those businesses that typically fall under the radar of most ‘big’ IT companies: the sub-100 employee category.We made the announcement at Channel Exchange here in Lisbon, Portugal, a country whose economy has been fueled in recent years by exceptionally high levels of broadband deployment and Internet adoption . The venue seems appropriate given our belief that the second phase of the Internet has much to offer small businesses too.Before we left for Lisbon, I cornered Ian Pennell, SVP of our newly-created Small Business Technology Group, and Andrew Sage, the VP who oversees our new small business sales strategy, and asked them a few questions about our new small business initiative.
