A colleague of mine is going to be silent for 10 days over the holiday break*.  10 days. 240 hours. 14,400 minutes.  It is a meditative thing.  I respect her decision to do this…very cool and certainly an experience not many have had.

She can’t talk, so I asked her if she could read.  Nope.  Which means web surfing is out of the question.  I, like many, HAVE TO BE CONNECTED AT ALL TIMES!!!  The network has become so pervasive in our lives that not having instant, anywhere access to information is nearly inconceivable.  Globally, broadband growth is still chugging away.  Today, we released a report that shows that Peru broadband growth grew nearly 10% in the first half of this year.  And, yesterday, Google released what they call the Zeitgeist.  The sum of the searches for the year.  What’s hot, what’s searched…and from where…and, of course, because this is 2010 and video is the medium for communications, they also released a very cool video with a catchy jam that is still in my head (who is this? anyone?!!).

There is also a “shout-out” to the double rainbow man in the video, but not this double rainbow man, who is a part of Cisco’s Zeitgeist 2010.

I’m going to take some time off over the holidays and spend some quality and quantity time with my family.  I’m certainly not going to be silent or disconnected for 10 days!!!  In Cisco vernacular, I will be “backing myself up”. Meaning, I am reachable if needed and no one is taking my calls or e-mails for me while I am on vacation.  So, I’ll be connected…but don’t expect an immediate response if it isn’t urgent.

How long could you be disconnected from the Network?  Me: when I’m sleeping.

Happy holidays to all!

  1. Never mind about the music credit…it is listed on the Google YouTube channel: Song is “GoodLife” by OneRepublic. Love them.

  2. I can’t imagine being disconnected for that long. It has been 1499 days since I was last disconnected for a period of at least 24 hours . . . I think it is time to just give in and connect the ethernet cables into my brain.

  7. Disconnecting from the internet is like disconnecting from foods and water for me. I don’t know how she can cope. I’m even “connected” in my dreams.
