The Platform Paradigm

Post by Padmasree Warrior, Chief Technology Officer

It is an exciting time to join Cisco.

Cisco is the company whose leadership legacy defines “The Network” in many ways.  Today, it is a company driving many new paradigms in communications and information technology.  In the future, it will be a company poised to lead the industry to the next phase of Internet evolution.

What are some of the characteristics of solutions driving the next wave of Internet evolution?  We already see many precursors for this such as, Collaboration, Web 2.0, and Always-on Demand.  Cisco has been at the forefront of this shift, where the network becomes the platform to deliver the next wave of applications and services.

Throughout its history, Cisco has demonstrated the ability to anticipate changes with a proven record of accomplishments for capturing market transitions. The company’s customer centric culture, unwavering commitment to technology, and passion for innovation, mark the platform for leadership.  Leveraging the reality of globalization, integrating outside and inside ideation through well-executed acquisitions, a relentless focus on financials and flawless delivery of results, delineate Cisco’s platform for talent.

I am eager to bring to Cisco my technical expertise, over 20 years of experience in many aspects of the communications industry, a global bent of mind and an energizing leadership style.  As we get to know each other, you will also see me as a tireless champion for innovation and inclusion.  I enjoy envisioning and creating the future, and leveraging technology leadership for business growth.  Expertise, experience, energy - these exemplify my platform for achievement.

This Platform Paradigm draws me to Cisco.

As I begin my journey here, I look forward to working with the talented and well-respected team at Cisco.  I am eager to tackle the challenges in the continued development and implementation of Cisco’s vision and technology strategy.  Together, we will explore and engage in new technology directions and business growth.

However, I will begin by listening…your comments, please.

Response to comments: Thank You.  Many thanks for all the support in welcoming me to Cisco.  I sincerely appreciate the warmth and excitement in the comments that so many of you have posted in response to my blog.  I am anxious to get going at Cisco, and hope to meet many of you in person very soon. I bet California is much warmer than Chicago, right now smile

Hey Padmasree, congratulations on the new job!  Cisco is really leading the pack with social technology.  The webex and five across deals are very interesting to say the least.  It shows that you’re ready to move in sync with the newly changing landscape of the Enterprise.  I’m a champion of Cisco, and am looking forward to seeing what Cisco does next.  Best of luck to you!

Welcome aboard, Padmasree. Collaboration, social networking, web 2.0, unified communications ... seems Cisco has a hand in most everything applicable to a connected world. Padmasree,

It is fabulous to have you on board. It is great to have your personal point of view on the “Platform Paradigm.”  As Cisco transitions from a product-centric to a platform centric-strategy and modus operandi, there is a great leadership challenge to communicate clearly to the workforce about the opportunities opened to Cisco, as well as the changes required to manage and execute to new and multiple business models.

Wishing you great success, Pat Keating

Hi Padmasree,

Congrats. Nice to see you at Cisco, good choice, but Chicago’s loss. I expect you will resume your own blog soon? Your voice and vision is appreciated in the blogosphere.

Best Wishes,

P.S. For those at Cisco, Padmasree is a class act, sincerely a wonderful exec to work with.

Andy Schroepfer Dec 4, 2007

Congrats on the new job. Curious if you care to comment on the consumer products unit of Motorola as to whether you feel those could benefit from being included in Cisco’s Linksys unit. If you were to credit for selecting Microvision’s technology at Motorola…congrats on being innovative and I hope you do similar things for Cisco on a much larger scale. Best of luck.

Hi Padmasree,

Congratulations on your new role at Cisco! Having experienced working with you at the other telecom company in Schaumburg, all I can say is that I envy the fortunate folks at Cisco.

BTW, I love the very cool Web 2.0-esque announcement of your arrival at Cisco! Looking forward to more blog posts.

Padmashree :

Congratulations & Welcome. Have always admired you and your “vision”.

I wholeheartedly agree with your comments on the “platform” - this is something that the industry at large “talks” about but little activity - Cisco is a leader in that it is walking the talk and has clearly recognized that “Solutions” rather than “Point Technologies” are the key to future success.

We will all be watching closely and supporting you as you help Cisco along its journey towards “Solutions” and “Platforms”.

Greg Papadopoulos Dec 4, 2007

Fantastic to have you in the Valley, Padmasree!

To all you Cisco employees (and shareholders): consider yourselves very fortunate.

Martin Stewart-Weeks Dec 4, 2007

Congratulations on the new role.
One specific dimension of the technology innovation dimension you might want to keep in mind is the impact on government, public policy and social progress.  I am part of the global Public Sector practice in IBSG, with responsibility for our public sector practice in Asia-Pacific (including some wonferful opportunities that are opening up in India). Exploring the way a “network as a platform” and Web 2.0 revolutions are impacting the business of government, and the imperatives of governing, is especially exciting.  Cisco has a box seat in jurisdictions around the world from which to contribute to, and sometimes to lead, the debate about how government and policy makers respond.

As a consumer, and an outsider, I find this a bit too much. To make such an announcement internally is excellent, but why to the public? It smacks of self, and corporate, promotion, which lowers the level of dignity of the act.

And the appended back slapping? What is this? High fives in cyberspace? Its tacky.

Keep this to yourselves - I didnt want to know that Rich is over the moon that you have a new career . .

Congratulations on joining Cisco, Padmasree!  Your embrace of the collaborative and social developments of technology is refreshing and invigorating.  Cisco is on the cusp of moving into the next level of its own growth and development.  If the company is able to fully advance toward the Cisco 3.0 vision and fortify the Cisco brand awareness at the consumer-level, the momentum will be huge.

Rakesh Gupta Dec 5, 2007

Dear Padmasree,

Wishing you all the best for your new job!  I would like to share the following with you:

(1) Internet is presently meant for individuals and businesses.  It’s more of an interface between individuals and service-providers.  There is no mapping here for human-relations and Society - at the protocol level.  We have a Service-Oriented-Architecture - but we don’t have a Society-Oriented-Architecture.

(2) Universally acceptable Social-Networking protocol across political, economic, and cultural boundaries - can be envisaged only by recognizing the universal-desire in humankind for realizing Coexistence (or harmony in relationships).

(3) Designing this protocol framework would be possible by considering the following facts:

a. number of peoples on Earth is finite.  internet needs to be seen as a network of peoples - rather than network of machines.
b. family is the first social-expression of a human-being.
c. society has self-regulation built in its very design.
d. social-networking needs to be seen as a protocol-framework, rather than multiple internet applications.

Perhaps, you and cisco can make the above happen!

regards,
Rakesh Gupta.

Congratulations on the new gig!  Cisco’s been making great strides in mobility (e.g. Don Proctor has been a gracious supporter of my Power of Mobility book), but your backgrounds in IP and Wireless bring new strength and credibility to those efforts.  I look forward to watching how this plays out!

I thought “Network is the computer” was good enough…the slogan having been coined by someone you were working with not so long ago:)
But seriously, don’t you think we will soon be back to independent infrastructure companies as distinct from “enterprise” customers who would be buying your stuff? If Network is indeed the Platform, I should think Cisco’s customers may get fewer in number, though larger.
Tell me about it.And all the best in your new role. cheers.
P.S. We have met, in Bangalore, when we were both in our previous jobs

Mazhar Dec 5, 2007

Hearty welcome, this is indeed a great news.  Having been in your earlier organisation and having experienced the tremendous energy and excitement that you manage to build up in the folks around you, I am sure we are in for some great times now. Feels good to be part of the Cisco family!

jbr Dec 5, 2007

Padmasree, congrats on this new role. This post does not sound like you at all. I have read several of your Moto Tech blog posts and that style is missing. I hope to see a return of your engaging writing style. This corporate speak post is very similar to the IBM commercials that make fun of such corporate speak. “ideation” is an exact term that is spoofed by the commercials. Please return to that funny, engaging style and best of luck on this new leg of your journey.

Sanjay Dec 5, 2007

Hi Padmashree,
Congratulation’s for your new assignment and best wishes.
We would be interested to know why you have left Motorola at the same time the CEO changed.

jbr Dec 5, 2007

Congrats on your new job! I am not sure this comment will make it through….please return to your blogging style exhibited on the Moto Tech blogs. You were funny, engaging and “real”. This initial post reads like the current IBM commercials that spoof corporate speak. “ideation” is a term they spoof specifically.

So, please show Cisco the “real” Padmasree via this blog and best of luck on this exciting new leg of your journey.

jim greene Dec 5, 2007

Congratulations and welcome Padmasree.  Your leadership and passion bleed out of your introductory comments.  This is great.  Our financial service clients are looking for technology led invention, innovation and profound change in models of business.  We look forward to collaborating with you and your team.

A Cisco Shareholder Dec 5, 2007

Excuse me, but with your 20+ years at Motorola, how come the company is now basically a bottom-tier performer? Were you that good that you, together with your cohort management team ran Motorola aground? Will you do the same at Cisco?

SRK Dec 5, 2007

Welcome aboard, Padmasree. Collaboration, Social Networking, Web 2.0, Unified Communications ... (sounds fairly similar with ‘seamless mobility’!). As someone rightly pointed out, @cisco we are limited by our imagination!!!
Wishing you great success, Look forward to your leadership at Cisco.

Congratulations Padmasree,

I remember reading about you long time back in an Indian news paper. Feels really happy to know that you too are with Cisco. Wish you good luck.

Dave Cynkin Dec 5, 2007

Congratulations, Padmasree!

In your new role, you will no doubt nurture many bright years ahead at Cisco. From what I’ve seen of late, Cisco is positioned to make great leaps in nurturing online business communications, perhaps more so than any other US technology company. Cisco’s timing in bringing you into the fold could not be better.

We were honored to see Cisco’s John Earnhardt at our event this year, and we’re continually impressed with Cisco’s forward-thinking new media utilization. Hope to see you engaging the fast-emerging new media business community at the ‘08 BlogWorld & New Media Expo Conference and Tradeshow.

FooBar Dec 5, 2007

Congratulations on your new role.

Collaboration, Social Networking, Web 2.0 - great aren’t exactly areas where Cisco is a household name. The acquisition of WebEX is a step that will help change this perception, but I am afraid Cisco is still a distant second rank citizen in this already well defined market. Web 2.0 is nothing new: Amazon.com and Ebay both survived the dot com bubble partly because they understood the need to factor in user input. As such, they’ve been the real early practioners of the web 2.0 concepts.

How do you see Cisco as a company that can revolutionize this space? From a network’s perspective, isn’t web 2.0 just HTTP after all?

Would you mind articulating your 5-year vision of the web’s evolution?

Ramesh Dec 5, 2007

Hey Padmasree
Congratulations on joining Cisco - the company which would lead in the efforts of next generation internet applications - particularly the video applications.

Just wanted to know your immediate 30 day, 60 day, 90 day and yearly goals. What challenges do you foresee when Cisco is at crossroads to deliver the next generation of internet applications on the network platform? What are all the new products you envision to add to Cisco legacy? What would be a breakthrough product which could be developed here at Cisco labs which would completely transform and revolutinize the world?

Your thoughts please…

Once again congratulations on the transition to Cisco. We all are here to add to your vision and strategy.

Congratulations on your being appointed as the CTO. I look forward to hopefully interacting with you on the innovation front and your immediate objectives that are expected to make an impact.

Chandru Dec 5, 2007

I don’t know Padmasree at all. As an outsider, i’m really curious why she is quitting Motorola at a moment when it appears to need her technology leadership really bad. Moto has no major success since Razr (& its variants), its market share is declining, employees are being laid off, cost-cutting measures, etc. I would expect her to show strong leadership in these times rather than jump the boat.

Chandra Pillai Dec 6, 2007

Hi Ms Warrior,

I am an outsider.. But I was part of the Moto projects and later with CISCO CVP projects through their partners some times back, so to some extent i knew about both the world

Nice to know about your new role..

To some extend i am reflecting some of those points raised by another “Chandru”..

In addition, i understand we are all sharing the vision of unified communication. or mobility ( whether the devices will need the capability with associated applications) or the platform ( mean seamless and ubiquitous)..Knowing well from CISCO’s point of view, it is the platform or SDP and not the end devices alone (if those devices will become IP entities)to offer those facilities..
Considering the growth of Web 2.0 and social networking (Relevance, preference and on time) based products and services, communication channels are getting converged as a single or common pipe..

But i was wondering as why as a CTO of Motorola the same was not strategized by you ( or we may not aware of your efforts).

Even in the IMS paradigm the control plan is the one which is managing all the unified need of the end device??
So why Motorola was not ready to redefine itself with that focus and turnaround its energy towards that direction..As a CTO why it was not carried out by you during your role..

Anyway.. Congratulations

Chandra Pillai

I’d like to congratulate you on your move to Motorola. As a former Motorola employee I firmly hope you bring the same level of quality, vision, and leadership to Cisco as you showed at Motorola. That vision being incorrectly parroting the views of your subordinates as your own and massively misjudging your industry. Your leadership with smartphones and views on the unimportance of touchscreens was really spectacular.

Is Cisco moving into mobility? I belive that Padmasree Warriors mobile tech experience will help in that strategy. Im think this was a smart move on Cisco’s part. And the fact that shes a powerful women thats just the icing on the cake and teh cherry on top!

Trent Mar 30, 2008

So a router company made some noise by hiring a mobility person as CTO. What does she know about Cisco’s core business? Was she hired to only oversee really new (slideware) technology at Cisco?

I hope she makes a difference, but the ice cream social “welcome to Cisco” comments are very enlightening.

Krishna Apr 3, 2008

A much better approach for CSCO (120B+) would have been acquiring MOT (20B+)‘s wireless handset division, to build the platform for “network convergence”, so to speak… Telepresence without mobility is like sitting in a room and meditating… hope they get it soon before it is too late.

Congrats on the personal career move… keep up the Indian spark glowing…

You talk a lot about Mobility from you Motorola background However CISCO is not a leader in macro wireless networks. Don’t you think one for CISCO to enter would be to acquire a wireless player - canadian or for that matter simply acquiring the ailing motorola division

Padmasree Warrier’s art of Management has become a part and parcel of everyday life, be it at home, in the office or factory and in Government. In all organizations, where a group of human beings assemble for a common purpose irrespective of caste, creed, and religion, management principles come into play through the management of resources, finance and planning, priorities, policies and practice. Management is a systematic way of carrying out activities in any field of human effort. Management need to focus more on leadership skills, e.g., establishing vision and goals, communicating the vision and goals, and guiding others to accomplish them. It also assert that leadership must be more facilitative, participative and empowering in how visions and goals are established and carried out. Some people assert that this really isn’t a change in the management functions, rather it’s re-emphasizing certain aspects of management.
Its task is to make people capable of joint performance, to make their weaknesses irrelevant, says the Management Guru Peter Drucker. It creates harmony in working together - equilibrium in thoughts and actions, goals and achievements, plans and performance, products and markets. It resolves situations of scarcity, be they in the physical, technical or human fields, through maximum utilization with the minimum available processes to achieve the goal. Lack of management causes disorder, confusion, wastage, delay, destruction and even depression. Managing men, money and materials in the best possible way, according to circumstances and environment, is the most important and essential factor for a successful management.

It’s great to see your first blog post in Cisco. I am too an Indian, and am proud of your achievements, Ms Padmashree.

At a time like this ..is it better to join a job at cisco(entry level bangalore R and D) or is it better to go in for higher education(eg MS in an ivy league). That is a choice I have to make…...anyone out there who has an opinion?
