The Flip @ CGI: Changing the World with Video

I’m at the annual Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) this week in New York and had the opportunity to chat a bit with Jonathan Kaplan (Cisco SVP/GM, Cisco Consumer Products).  He’s very passionate about what video can do generally, as well as what it can do to change the world.  Two years ago, he and Pure Digital committed to getting ONE MILLION Flip video cameras in the hands of non-profits and NGO’s through the Flip Video Spotlight program.

The beauty and simplicity of video, of course, is that you don’t have to read about this program.  Watch and hear Jonathan talking about the program (in the albeit a bit noisy lobby of the CGI conference):

From the CGI commitment:

“The Flip Video Spotlight program offers qualified NGO partners access to Spotlight Kits through a matching donor program. Each kit contains two camcorders (one funded by the partner NGO and one donated by Pure Digital) and membership in a community of social change activists using video to raise awareness, increase participation of members and donors, teach skills, and document their work.”

It is great giving cameras away to NGOs, but how about actually shipping some for retail sale to Poland and other places in Europe?

Interesting concept.  But would those places where they are being donated have the internet connections to then upload and share the videos?
