Thanksgiving Education by YouTube

Isn’t it great to be back at work after Thanksgiving break?!!  That’s what I thought.

I had a true “John Chambers is right!!” moment over Thanksgiving that I feel compelled to share.

About 10 minutes prior to Thanksgiving dinner I was informed that I was to do the honors of carving the turkey.  That’s all well and good except that I’ve never carved a turkey and was quite sure that it wasn’t like cutting a sandwich in half, which was basically the sum total of my experience with carving heretofore.

“What to do?”  I thought.  Search for “how to carve a turkey” on my phone, of course.  Carving a turkey is quite complicated (if done right) it turns out and the text and small pictures didn’t really get me to the level of confidence I needed.  I then borrowed my wife’s iPhone and searched videos on “how to carve a turkey” and voila:

The video got me trained up in no time flat and we all were able to enjoy a delicious turkey that was moderately unmangled and quite delicious, thankyouverymuch.  Hope you had a great Thanksgiving!

I am based in the UK and so do not have to worry about any Thanksgiving dinner, but of course Christmas is approaching within the next few weeks and I have absolutely no idea how to cook a turkey. Fortunately my mother does, but I would like to learn myself and I think this video will help a great deal. I love cooking chickens, but never know how to carve them open so as you can tell, I am completely useless in the kitchen. Thanks for the YouTube link.

Great recipe. It ´s good that a turkey is eating only once a year, because of the calories…

Ha, thats’s a laugh. It’s kind of like when I tried to watch an NHL hockey game on an 11” OLED TV. Not too practical.

It can be pretty stressful if you have to be the one to carve a turkey, especially if it is a new family.  Last year we brought our new baby to visit grandparents and they wanted me to carve the organic turkey.  I felt like I was up on stage with everybody watching me to see how I did!  I wish I had watched this video first, I would have had a little more confidence.

Carving a turkey is quite complicated

Koh Samui Villas Jan 21, 2010

Choose a sharp, thin-bladed carving knife. Running your knife along the bottom of the turkey, find the places where the thighbones meet the body.
Step 2
Slip your knife into the joint to separate thigh from body on each side.
Step 3
Separate the drumstick from the thigh using the same technique (cut through the joint, not the bone, wiggling the drumstick to locate the joint).
Step 4
Running your knife along the bone, separate the meat from the thigh and drumstick’try to get as much as possible in one piece.
Step 5
Cut thigh and leg meat into thin slices.
Step 6
Use your knife to find where the wings and body connect.
Step 7
Slip your knife into the joint to separate wings from body on each side.
Step 8
Carve thin slices off one side of the breast, cutting parallel to the breast.
Step 9
Repeat with the other side of the breast.
Have fun and bon appetite
