Russian Rock Concert over TelePresence

The Parlotones on Stage in Moscow

South African rock band The Parlotones have been making use of Cisco technology to get to new followers.  While fans waited for their first live concert in Russia in early November, the South African rock band paid a virtual visit to Moscow via Cisco TelePresence.

From London, they joined a press conference hosted by Cisco Russia and discussed their upcoming tour with local music journalists. Then the scene shifted to the halls of the Moscow World Trade Center, where – still using Cisco TelePresence technology - The Parlotones gave a transcontinental virtual concert for visitors of the annual Cisco Expo ICT forum.

Here’s a short video of The Parlotones’ virtual visit to Moscow:

Leonid Burlakov, musical producer and promoter of The Parlotones in Russia said after the session that the “technology produces a stunning effect. It gave me the impression that the musicians and myself are staying in the same room. I am absolutely sure that this is technology of the future. We are on the brink of a new era in show business”.

I can attest that guitars play really nicely on TelePresence.  A couple of months ago we were meeting with one of our design partners, whom we had written an amusing song for. I brought a 12-string guitar to the meeting and my team and I sang the song to our counterparts in Virginia to kick off the meeting.

By all accounts the sound quality (if the the playing itself) was excellent!

Its great to read this post.I would also like to share some history about Parlotones .The Parlotones began his career in 2006, playing in nightclubs at five or six in the audience, but a half years later released their first CD, which immediately received the status of gold. Their second disc (A World Next Door To Yours) drew the attention of British promoters. With their help musicians from South Africa gave about 400 concerts in Europe and performed at various festivals with Collective Soul, Evanescence, Jimmy Eat World, Kings of Leon, New Model Army, Metallica, Razorlight, Staind, Starsailor, The Gossip, The Rasmus, The Wombats, UB40 and Violent Femmes. November 8 for the first time the group will arrive in Russia and perform in Moscow.

Awesome to see a homegrown (South African) band up there and making use of Cisco technology!

You guys rock! (pun intended!)

i guess you will call me old fashioned but I think nothing replaces a live concert such as U2. I had the pleasure of attending and it was just incredible! Not just listening to the music but feeling it, smelling it and living with others watching it.

I have a 21 year old son who is also a musician and he feels the same.

With this said, I believe the Youtube live video streaming of the band is a fantastic marketing tool as it gives others a real sense of what it could be like and hence build their enthusiasm for catching them live in the future. The same for TP as a wonderful taster of what’s to come and to bring those who cannot attend live a little closer!

As a fellow South African living in the U.S. Since 2000 I can say This Rocks. This is awesome use of our technology and certainly shows ‘The Play’ in Work, Live, Play and Learn. I’m sure this is going to catch on fast. The Sound and video quality was great.

Very cool!  Good sound quality from my end, and a really good band.  Good way for bands to get their music out there!

I agree that one of the natural progressions of technology in action is through Entertainment, especially with music.  It is universal.
I was so touched by another global grass roots effort of connecting people through music that i HOPE somehow, someday our technology can enhance what they have ignited grin Peace, Love and Music!

I still get shivers down my spine from watching recorded performances on youtube. There are only so many concerts you can attend. I love that technology has been developed to aid this.

This is great. Now you can enjoy live shows from the comfort of your home!

Kris Altesino Nov 14, 2009

Wow.  Amazing technology.  I hope our company buys this soon.  We have weekly conference with our Japan office and our calls like like desktop webcams!

This type of technology could / should be used to help with medical procedures, very interesting reading on this topic, Thanks for taking the time to post this.

James Nov 15, 2009

This, with 3D, would rock (pun definitely intended) smile

This has been a direction that some big named bands have been taking in recent months. People can’t afford to go to concerts but they can afford to watch them from the comfort of their own home. I think we will see the technology to make things like this happen grow even more in the very near future.
