Flip Video: The NBA Tips Off with a Little Thing

“Little things make big things happen.” John Wooden, UCLA Basketball Coach Extraordinaire

Most would consider it little. It only measures 3.94” x 1.97” x 0.66” (H x W x D). However, in this global, flat world it can enable big changes: it is the Flip MinoHDTM.

In my June 9 blog entry, I noted that “in communications and collaboration, video, combined with voice and data, is a game changer.”  In an increasingly complex, dispersed world, overload is considered the new normal. People are looking for capabilities to build trust and enable global teams to collaborate confidently.

At Cisco, Flip cameras allow us to regularly record and distribute communications to both internal and external audiences. Recently, we have heard that Flip users are recording industry experts and sharing highlights. Stand-up comics report that they record their own rehearsals and use playback to hone their performance. For others, it has become the new productivity tool: a way to take away and study topics discussed in a meeting, replacing written notes.

Now, even the NBA is using Flip video cameras.

In September of this year, the NBA partnered with Cisco to create the NBA Flip Video Diaries. Five rookies, players and legends share their individual training routines and experiences with fans via a Flip Video diary.

Mike Bibby (Atlanta Hawks), Andre Iguodala (76ers), Derek Fisher (Lakers), Danny Granger (Pacers) and Stephen Curry (Warriors) documented their preparations for the upcoming season and post it to www.nba.com/flipvideo. You can follow these players and get a glimpse into the behind the scenes training of an NBA player.

For years, sports teams have used videos to develop competitive game plans, to study a player’s strengths, weaknesses and moves. Now video is changing the fan experience, allowing players to share situations and moments previously unknown to much of the public. As for building trust with the players, I’m not sure how the rest of the fans are reacting, but I trust Derek Fisher when he says “time to get started on our quest to become champions again.”

That’s a great way of using that technology. I’m looking forward to see what’s next.

Video takes the old adage about a “picture being worth a thousand words” to an extreme. Whether in a business, sports or personal application, The Flip makes capturing video drop dead easy and creates a bond between the viewer and the producer. I have a Flip and I’ve heard of several applications to business similar to those that you discuss here. Generally, it’s my understanding that the resulting communication has been more successful than “traditional” methods with increase attention and retention.

Those flip video cameras are such convenient things. Love them. Talking about watching NBA, you can look up what to consider before buying a laptop tv card
