Security: Covering All Bases and Keeping Your Eyes on the Ball

Baseball season is in full swing now (pardon the pun), and I can’t help drawing comparisons with smart game management and smart business management—especially in the security arena. With baseball, it’s really about making sure you have defenses fanned out across the playing field and have the right positions in play, while taking advantage of every opportunity to get ahead. Isn’t that what we do all the time in business?

But, the difference between winning and losing in security is significant. The stakes are high.

As I’ve mentioned in a previous blog post, Cisco researchers saw 90% growth in threats originating from legitimate domains during 2008; that’s nearly double what was seen in 2007. Not only that, cybercriminals are shifting their sights to grab larger caches of data from larger companies. And as we’re all witnessing, the tactics are becoming increasingly sophisticated. This becomes a thornier issue as our business models rely more on collaboration inside and outside the corporate network perimeter. And, as our work and data become more mobile, moving to and from premise and cloud. That’s why we really need to keep our eyes on the ball to determine what we can do to balance defense and offense, so we can advance and not just hold ground. And that’s why the announcements we’re making at RSA this week are especially important. We’re rolling out additions to our security portfolio that bolster network security and delivery of cloud security services.

I won’t give away too much here except to say that without evolving your security infrastructure to keep pace with the changing threat landscape, the ability to collaborate with confidence becomes hampered. What’s needed: pervasive security that supports collaboration and mobility technologies so you can take care of business how, when, and where you want—a balance of protection and enablement.

If you plan to attend RSA, stop by our booth and say hello. And don’t forget to check out the keynotes. John Chambers, our chairman and CEO, will be speaking Wednesday at 3:20 pm. If you can’t make it in person, you can attend a live webcast at http://www.cisco.com/offer/rsakeynote.

I hope to see you there!
