Coming Soon: Translation Through the Network

Unfortunately, I don't speak Spanish, but with time and some more CD's my 15-month old son will hopefully be at least bi-lingual. Right now, "da-da" is easily translatable into many languages, so he's got that going for him.

Communications is Cisco's business and the ability to communicate in multiple languages is imperative to operating in the global marketplace. Although many people outside of the U.S. speak English in conducting business, not that many Americans speak multiple languages. I am told that at some point in the not too distant future the network will be able to do the translating for us real time over intelligent IP infrastructure. In other words, you will speak, say Mandarin Chinese on one end of your phone and the person on the other end, who is a Spanish speaker, will hear Spanish on her end of the phone...or TelePresence system. Think of the implications for trade and for making the world a flatter place to work and live. It will certainly be huge for the travel and tourism business. Maybe for world peace as well. Did I go too far? The network will bring us world peace? Okay, maybe a bit too far.

However, I'm still looking forward to the day of being able to say more than "La Cerveza, por favor" and being understood in Spanish speaking locales.

Translation into Spanish is from FreeTranslation.com.
