Cisco's New Managed Services Channel Program
Post by Edison Peres, Vice President, Worldwide Channels
It is not hard to see that the managed services space is HOT. Customers are seeing the benefit of buying technology as a service, proven by the fact that the managed services market continues to outpace IT industry growth. I recently read a report from Ovum Research which forecasts managed services to grow at approximately 20% CAGR and reach US$7B in revenue by 2009. Advanced technologies such as managed IP telephony and security show the most momentum with 65% and 28% growth, respectively.
This growth presents a phenomenal opportunity for Cisco and its partners, and I am proud to announce the availability of the new Managed Services Channel Program. Think of this new program as a framework designed to accelerate the development and delivery of managed services through Cisco partners. This program marks a major step towards the development of the IT industry’s first offer-based channel strategy. To learn more about the program, please visit our Managed Services webpage.
In this video, Tom Williams, Director, Managed Services Channel Program, talks a bit about managed services, SLAs, and why managed services are beneficial to our customers.

The Power of Social Networking
Post by Dan Scheinman, SVP and GM, Media Solutions Group
Just a quick note to demonstrate the power of social networking: Shortly after giving my talk at the Web 2.0 Summit, I had this note waiting for me on NHL Connect, one of the social networking sites I’m active in, and a partner running an early version of the Community component of our Eos platform:
"I was in the audience for your high order bit at Web 2.0. You asked audience members to email you or find you on NHL.com and I discovered that it’s easier to join and contact you here than to find an email address through the Cisco site. :-)"
Imagine when social networking is packaged with video content all the way to your TV! If you haven’t had the chance, check out http://fans.nhl.com.

Video: Cisco to Acquire Navini Networks
Today Cisco announced the definitive agreement to purchase Navini Networks, a pioneer and a leader in the the Mobile WiMAX 802.16e-2005 broadband wireless industry.
The acquisition of Navini will expand Cisco’s market-leading WiFi and WiFi-Mesh portfolios and expand Cisco's "Connected Life" vision to deliver any service to any device over any network. Cisco also expects that WiMAX technologies will play a key role in Cisco's “Digital Inclusion” initiative that will drive broadband penetration to consumers and business in emerging countries. This has the potential to add millions of new Internet users who cannot be reached economically because of the lack of copper and fiber infrastructures in those countries.
In this video, Ned Hooper, senior vice president of Cisco's Corporate Business Development, discusses the reasons Cisco acquired Navini and how this deal fits into Cisco's acquisition and innovation strategies.

Me/We + Community = Welcome
Post by Dan Scheinman, SVP and GM, Cisco Media Solutions Group
Hi! I must admit to still having that speaker’s high just coming off the stage at Web 2.0 Summit. Today, Cisco, and my group Cisco Media Solutions Group in particular, had our debut in Web 2.0. We talked about three things today (which you can see more of in my colleague Scott Brown’s blog entry):
1) We showed that Cisco’s network assets are relevant to Web 2.0, particularly in the entertainment space. We showed that Network + Web 2.0 assets can help address the most challenging problem of the next era: how to find anything. Or, how can Content Finds YouTM.
2) We showed that the disruption caused by the rise of the empowered consumer is generating a billion dollar opportunity for tech companies to partner with content companies.
3) We announced Eos (the Entertainment Operating System) an open, software-based platform which will make it easy for publishers to have great community-based entertainment experience online.
Web 2.0 is a great conference. Not only do you have the big guys here (today I followed Meg Whitman and Steve Ballmer), but you have people building Facebook apps and everything in between. The energy here is a bit like a revival in that we are all believers in this great thing, and we all want to see it work. I find there is a ton of support in the hallways, and lots of interesting people milling around. Web 2.0 is where you can see entertainment, tech, and startups milling the halls. The atmosphere is great.
Today for me is a beginning. You are going to hear from me and from my team increasingly over the next months as we get ready for launch. As this is Web 2.0, I want to hear from you! Let me know what you think and how we are doing.
We have been dark for so long, it is cool to lift the veil just a bit today. Thanks all for reading!

Grey's Anatomy, 24, The Office and Cisco's Human Network
Post by Marilyn Mersereau, Vice President, Corporate Marketing
Have you seen our new Human Network video? Did you watch football last weekend? The next phase of the Cisco Human Network campaign kicked off on October 14th with a TV commercial during an NFL game.
The commercial further reveals Cisco's role in the Human Network as well for the workspace. It uses Cisco Unified Communications in the workplace to empower people with better collaboration, productivity, and innovation. The video is meant to entice viewers to visit our new Human Network microsite. TV viewers who have seen video “front stories” now have the choice to learn more about the backstories. The front stories showcase innovative Cisco solutions through an engaging story that solve customer’s business needs. The back stories give the viewer a chance to dig deeper and learn more about the product and the technology, thus establishing our relevance with the Human Network.
This is big for Cisco for a few reasons:
1. We are trying to engage with our customers and viewers in a way we haven’t before - by using web 2.0 technologies on our Human Network Microsite. Certainly a peek at things to come for Cisco.com
2. This campaign is now able to show the connection – beyond the human element – to the business elements. We can show how Cisco can make the difference in collaboration and communication on the Human Network.
We are still looking at other ways to spotlight our solutions. So take a closer look at Grey’s Anatomy and CSI the next time you’re in watching the tube. In addition to catching the doctors in their hospital scrubs and the yellow crime scene tape, you may just notice some strategically placed Cisco products in the shows.
In addition to high-profile product placement in popular programs such as 24, K-Ville, and The Office, the campaign will use a variety of media to create a 360 degree experience of both online marketing activities and storytelling, with an emphasis on digital and video delivery.
Keep checking back - November will bring new videos, new content on our microsite and a treasure hunt you can participate in.

Web 2.0, Entertainment and the Network
Most people today know the role the network plays in the distributing and connecting people to information and entertainment. But what’s Cisco’s role in the “networkification of stuff” happening in the Web 2.0 movement?
That’s the question Dan Scheinman, SVP and GM of the Cisco Media Solutions Group, addressed today in his Higher Order Bits talk at the Web 2.0 Summit. (And in the process answering the #1 question we got in the hallways: “Cisco at Web 2.0?”)
Think about it: the digitization of content and access to broadband is revolutionizing how people choose to be entertained. As a result of this technical revolution, the entertainment business is evolving. Yes, Cisco is already part of this revolution with its heritage in core networking, and by connecting many consumers to entertainment through either a Linksys home router or to their flat-screen TV through a Scientific Atlanta set-top box. But the network is more than a fire-hose of content. The network can ultimately provide a Web 2.0esque entertainment experience by bridging the gap between consumers and content owners.
Think about it. The entertainment revolution to-date has been about adding capacity to our entertainment options – for example, in the US we’ve gone from a handful of broadcast TV channels, to 100s of channels on cable and satellite, social networks and your favorite shows online. At the same time, digitization of content has removed many limitations of when, where, and how we consume content. Yes, these trends have empowered us, but we are now facing an overwhelming amount of choice and content .
This new reality has created the We/Me movement. People still want to have the social experience around entertainment (the “We”). They want to want to hang around the virtual water cooler watching videos with friends, discussing their favorites, and increasingly adding their own creations to content through comments, mashups, derivative works, etc. But the proliferation of choice has also led to people demanding a more personalized entertainment experience (the “Me”) to help them deal with the volume of content. The entertainment industry is struggling to deliver the We/Me experience, and still get paid for the valuable content they create.
Right, so what’s Cisco’s and the network’s role in bridging the We/Me gap? Cisco is working on Eos, a software platform that serves as an entertainment operating system enabling consumers to have an interactive, personalized, community-based entertainment experience, WHILE simplifying the administrative experience for content owners in engaging audiences, and distributing and monetizing their content.
To sum it up: today we have silos of entertainment content. As the silos disappear, the ability to deliver an interactive, “Web 2.0” entertainment experience becomes very valuable to both consumers and content owners. Having both the distribution and connection (to both the set-top box and home network) becomes strategic in providing that next-generation experience.
Stay tuned…

Star Trek, The Jetsons and Cisco TelePresence
"With the development of the TelePresence video conferencing system, Cisco has breathed life into the science fiction video phones of the Jetsons and Star Trek." So says the sub-head of Design News article on Cisco TelePresence.

We are obviously excited about our technology and it is fun to see others see what we are seeing...literally through TelePresence...and philosophically, with our vision for what TelePresence can actually "do" in the workplace. It is all about collaboration, cutting travel and being more productive while having much the same experience as sitting in a conference room in Boise, Birmingham, Boston or Bangalore.
Great quote from a TelePresence customer: “Most people are agape when they walk in,” says Jim Kittridge, senior vice president for Wachovia Corp., the giant financial services company that has purchased three TelePresence systems and plans to buy two more by year’s end. “They literally gasp; they can’t believe what they’re seeing.”
Because collaboration and collaborative technologies are so important to us, yesterday we launched a new collaboration blog called "The Workspace." Our CEO, John Chambers, offers the very first entry on this blog...(side note: this is also his first external written blog entry!)
He states, in part: "We are on the cusp of a new era where the Internet is transforming businesses large and small, and creating an entirely new environment for today’s workforce to communicate, collaborate and achieve. We have an opportunity to usher in a new era of economic growth and productivity and Internet-driven collaboration technologies are at the core of this transformation." Very appropriate lead-in to the Design News article on TelePresence.

Cisco and NHL Sharks Honor San Jose, CA Education
Post by Sandra Wheatley, Senior Manager, Public Relations
Joe Pinto, Cisco SVP and Patrick Marleau of the San Jose Sharks joined other Silicon Valley concerned citizens at a “Spirit of Santa Clara Valley” breakfast this morning, hosted by San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce. Cisco was among a number of sponsors that honored three education organizations. The honorees were National Hispanic University, Downtown College Prep and Silicon Valley Reads. All three organizations are focused on making education a priority for youth in the community.
National Hispanic University enables Hispanics and other minorities to acquire an undergraduate degree or certificate using a multicultural education experience to obtain a professional career in business, education or technology.
Downtown College Prep (DCP) prepares underachieving students who will be the first in their families to go to college to thrive at four-year universities. Since 2004, DCP has graduated 173 students and 85% are on track to earn a four-year degree.
Silicon Valley Reads promotes reading and literacy. Each February, public events are scheduled throughout the month to spark discussion of the themes of selected books.
