Cisco Eos™:  What’s in a name?

We’ve received a lot of questions about the name “Cisco Eos” since launching the platform: What does Eos stand for?  Where did the name come from?  Etc.

Let me try to answer some of those questions here:

Cisco Eos is the name of the platform (note the capitalization of Eos; that becomes important in a second)

Anyone that has tried to name a consumer-facing product recently knows how difficult it can be to come up with a name that is short, memorable, easy to say… AND is, well, distinct.  After evaluating more names than what I care to remember, we settled on “Cisco Eos”.

OK, so what does “Eos” mean?  Cisco Eos is a proper noun, and doesn’t mean anything else.  It’s not an acronym (hence, the lack of ALL CAPS).

Granted, there is a story around the name that’s led to some confusion:

When presenting the “not yet named Eos” platform to a media company exec ~18 months ago, the exec commented that what we were really building was an operating system for them to manage all of their online communities and web assets from a single environment.  CMSG SVP & General Manger Dan Scheinman alluded to that story onstage at the 2007 Web 2.0 Summit, and ever since then people have tried to make Eos an acronym for “entertainment operating system” or something else.

Sorry, sometimes a name is just a name.

Sounds like the old McDATA Eos a few years back.  Since they’re gone might as well take the name smile

It reminds me of the Canon EOS camera.

Green Laser (or is it Mr. Pointer?), there are some similar names in different product categories.  That’s one of the challenges of finding a short, memorable name for the consumer space.
