All Hail ‘Todd’—Web Developers and the Social Entertainment Experience

From what I’ve seen, there’s a healthy tension that exists within most media companies today.  A tension that comes from balancing the needs/wants of three sometimes competing perspectives – that of the “business” (aka making money), the “creative” (aka the “brand” or storytellers) and the technology (aka the technology).

it seems like it’s the “web developer” in media companies that’s usually given the opportunity to satisfy each of these perspectives by delivering the “perfect” fan experience.

In our Cisco Eos vignette series, we call this individual “Todd” and he deserves our sympathy and kudos.

Web developers like Todd are the alchemists of the media world, weaving and MacGyvering various technologies and systems together to deliver a real-world version of the exquisite Photoshop mock-ups they’re typically handed by visual designers.image

Because web developers are the lynch pins to the success of these online-media experiences, many of the features and workflows in Cisco Eos were engineered specifically for them.

That doesn’t mean our initial conversations with web developers in media companies is always a love fest – they’ve been promised too many platforms and tools that will make them faster, more efficient and better looking to NOT have a healthy sense of skepticism.  But the developers that are most adept at reading the organizational tea leaves about balancing the need to make money, deliver compelling experiences, and scaling those experiences across a large number of sites quickly quickly realize that an open and integrated platform like Cisco Eos delivers a broader palette of options to work from – all without limiting the artistic side of their job in delivering highly customized end-user experiences.

To all the “Todds” out there, thank you.
