Have you ever wished that your coffee were automated?
Do you like Chicago in November? Do you want to talk to industry experts? Do you want to know how voice, video and data converge on the plant floor?
All answers point to ‘Yes’!
Rockwell Automation Fair is fast approaching. It will be held at the McCormick Convention Center, Chicago, from November 15th-17th. Over 13,000 attendees are expected to attend this annual showcase of manufacturing solutions. The event is free for attendees, and Cisco will have a major presence there.
Watch Kevin Davenport, Cisco Manufacturing Guru, channel his inner old-spice man as he convinces you that attending Automation Fair is an absolute must. Also, be sure to check out all of Cisco’s social media activity planned for the event.
After all, Ike knows convergence, and you should hang with Ike.

An unsung hero
When Steve Jobs passed away on October 5th, the world focused on remembering his creativity, genius and the influence he had on our world. While this attention was well deserved, another — perhaps more influential – technology luminary passed away on October 12th. But, outside computer science circles, most people have never heard of him.
You had to do a bit of digging, but you could find some great eulogies in the news: Read More »

The month of October was a tough month for me. I found myself being moved by the passing of two innovators, Steve Jobs and Al Davis, owner of my beloved football team the Oakland Raiders. Although I’ve never meet Steve Jobs or Al Davis, I found myself reflecting on why these two individuals had such a profound impact on my life and the world. I began to reflect on the parallels of both men’s journey, and came to the conclusion that what made these individuals so unique was FEAR. Not fear itself, but how they both moved FEAR FORWARD in their journey toward being successful Innovators and agents of change. Read More »

Automation Fair is just around the corner – two weeks from now. Convergence will be alive at AF this year. My colleagues Peter Granger and Andrew Lach have blogged about Cisco’s overall presence and our social media channel, respectively.
In my video, I highlight the Innovation and Collaboration that the convergence of plant and enterprise networks enables, which we will be showcasing in our Cisco booth on the AF show floor, including:

As you know there are many changes in manufacturing operations today. These certainly relate to Operations Excellence, Continuous Innovation, Energy Management, even the Supply Chain and Customer Service world. There are technology changes and personnel changes. There are Global impacts as manufacturing companies compete in new regions and those same new regions sprout new manufacturers. And at the end of the day (or maybe the beginning?) there is a need for someone to build a specialized machine.
We have already seen the power of a converged (technologically) network. Ethernet/IP helps the controls world provide information to the IT world. We see this every day, where older proprietary networks are replaced by standard Ethernet. Here are some thoughts as they relate to specialized machine builders:
So, we have this technology that can unify us, Ethernet. Who knew that years ago I sold against Ethernet? But that was a different version. Today is new, with managed switches, managed services, and tomorrow is your new today.
