Cisco USD$10,000 Video Contest: Using Social Media to Share Ideas & Build a Community

Cisco hosted the Ragan Communications Social Media Summit, June 9-11, 2010 in San Jose. The Social Media Summit brought together several of the most influential presenters such as Guy Kawasaki, Michael Brito, Jeremiah Owyang, Kenny Lauer, and Bob Duffy to discuss social media tools, strategies & best practices around today’s top brands.
During her keynote, Jeanette Gibson, Cisco’s Director of Global Social Media Marketing, presented the Cisco “What If Your TV Could….?” Video Contest to highlight one of the social media programs that Cisco launched on May 13, 2010 asking people to submit a video on what they wish their television could do for an opportunity to win USD$10,000 and/or one of (3)USD$500 Amazon.com gift cards.
This contest was designed to build a fun community around generating innovative ideas from crowdsourcing. ….and that is exactly what is happening! We have had over 100 video submissions, as well as dozens of ratings & comments on all of the video submissions. We are receiving very creative and fun videos from the community. The highest rated videos right now are “The Girl & American Man Virtual TV”, “The Best Videos So Far,” and we even just received our first rap music video called “Best Friend” which is currently the highest rated video on the contest website.
I had the opportunity to interview a few of the social media influencer’s at the summit, such as Carlos Dominguez, SVP of Cisco, who wishes his television had the “Augmented Reality” Function & wanted to share a few of these ideas with you.
