Cisco is pushing the envelope in home networking again, with the launch today of a new version of its supercharged E4200 home wireless-n router. The new Linksys® E4200 v2 Maximum Performance Dual-Band N900 wireless-n router provides wireless networking speeds up to 450 Mbps* in the 2.4 GHz band and up to 450 Mbps* in the 5.0 GHz band, a faster processor for quicker downloads from a USB connected storage drive, and greater range for use in large or multi-room homes. The E4200 v2 can handle all of the latest and most intensive home entertainment needs from streaming HD video to music downloads and multi-player gaming.

Additionally, the combination of internal and external amplifiers coupled with six antennas help increase the signal strength across greater distances, providing improved home network coverage and reducing dead spots. The virtual USB feature makes it easy to add printers, storage and other USB devices to the network and with the added 1.2 GHz processor users can experience faster download speeds from their USB connected storage device. Included in all Linksys E-Series routers is Cisco Connect® software, which provides the framework for simple setup and network management.

So this is what you get with the new E4200 V2:

So what is different from E4200 V1 and E4200 V2:

  • E4200 V2 includes 3×3 in both the 2.4 and 5.0 GHz band.  E4200 only had 3×3 on the 5.0 GHz band.
  • Improved CPU to include a 1.2 GHz processor (up from a 533 MHz)
  • And our firmware was developed in house so we can provide faster bug fixes to users and also deliver other unique features.

So basically you are getting the top of the line technology to give you faster performance, better coverage and better overall experience!

Price is $199 available at major online retailers and at the Linksys online store.

If you are wondering if you can upgrade your E4200 V1 to the V2 – unfortunately can’t.  The V2 includes hardware changes within the router.

Oh don’t forget if you haven’t downloaded the Cisco Connect Express Mobile app – you should consider – for it helps you monitor and make changes to your home network using other connected devices beyond their PCs.

The Cisco Connect Express app is available for no charge at the Apple App Store or Android Market. The mobile app works with most Linksys E-Series and X-Series wireless routers. The new app requires that the iOS or Android devices have an active Wi-Fi connection to the home router.

Routers like the E4200 V2 make a great holiday gift! It helps your iPad/tablet, smart phone, game console and new computers work better for they include wireless-n technology and when paired with a wireless-n router – you’ll get a better overall experience!

CNET just gave the E4200 V2 an Editors’ Choice Award.. Check it out!

  1. We are in the market for a new dual band ourselves and think we are going to go ahead and puchase the E4200 V2. Thanks for the great article Karen. We'll let you know how it works out for us.

    • Thanks for reaching out.. and Yes let me know what you think of it, how the install was and if you saw some improvements to your range and speed. Happy Networking!

  2. Hi Karen, Is there any chance for firmware update for the WAG series gateways to support IPv6? Or your intention for IPv6 adaptation is to only support it in new devices going forward?

    • Unfortunately we are not able to provide upgrade to support the WAG series for IPV6. IPV6 is supported in our Linksys E-Series and X-series products and we plan to support IPV6 in our products going forward. I appreciate you asking this question.

  3. Is there a way to tell on the external packaging what version is inside? The "live chat" support was useless and told me the only difference was a firmware fix.

    • Hi Gerry -- yes the E4200 V2 will say E4200 V2 on the package. Right now the E4200 V2 is only available online via online retailers or our Linksys store. Try this link that I pulled from price grabber: hope this helps!

  4. Excellent Fatastic I Like It Very Much Thanks For Introducing CISCO!
