Green Counts: One Million Acts and Growing

How “green” are you? Chances are you’re already helping the environment with things you do every day. If you recycle at home, use a refillable coffee cup, or even telecommute one day a week, you’re doing your part to help the planet. And Cisco wants to help show you how.

In October 2008, Cisco launched One Million Acts of Green in Canada to show that individual, organizational, and community acts of green add up to something significant. The program asked everyone in Canada for an act of green. It could be small, like recycling. Or something bigger, like installing solar panels. The site’s calculator, designed by GreenNexxus, shows the positive impact in greenhouse gases saved.

So far, with nearly 2 million acts of green recorded, site users have saved 485 million pounds of greenhouse gases. That’s the equivalent of taking nearly 47,000 cars off the road for an entire year.

Now that we’ve launched the program in the United States, we’re asking everyone for an act of green. You can start at the One Million Acts of Green website and record your acts, and learn other ways to help reduce the effects of global warming. The site also features some useful information and educational resources, along with blog posts and articles.

You Too Can Be a Green-Tipper
Recently, on the One Million Acts of Green site, the Green Nexxus folks started a “green tip” contest, and many members have already shared some innovative ideas. Here are just a few that caught my eye:

• Having a problem with ants: recommend placing “bay-leaves” in cupboards, on the floor, etc.
• Donate worn towels and blankets to an animal shelter instead of sending to a landfill. Great for the environment and great for pets in need.
• Use vinegar at the rinse cycle as fabric softener. It softens the clothes, remove static, and clean the washing machine at the same time. No need to use any softener for drying. I’ve been doing this for years and the clothes smell fresh!

If you have an innovative idea for a green tip, or even something simple that may not be listed on the site, feel free to weigh in. Visit the site: http://www.OneMillionActsOfGreen.com, go to Blogs and Forums, and submit your idea. Receive the most votes, and you could win an iTunes gift card.
