Darrell, an excellent and timely piece. I think you could go even further though in articulating the fundamental business case for acting on CO2 and sustainability.

We are entering another economic revolution, even larger than the last one that California and companies like Cisco so ably led. It is not just a cleantech revolution, but a total transformation of our processes of production and consumption, forced on us by the realities of finite resources being consummed by a population heading for 9 billion and near double digit growth in GDP in the BRIC economies.

The Internet Revolution saw the humbling of incumbent giants like Encyclopedia Britannica, and the rise of new market leaders like Wikipedia to replace them. The incumbents ignored and denied the importance of the changes taking place and suffered as a result.

At 2degrees (http://www.2degreesnetwork.com) we witness on a dailly basis, many of the Sustainability Revolution's prosepctive leaders and winners, collaborating to build a true Sustainable Competitive Advantage. As a friend of California, but not a native, it seems incredible to me that the state that built the new economy might risk losing out in the race to build the sustainable one.
