Cisco and Streetline Innovate for Smart Parking: Introducing Camera Based Detection and an Integrated Streetline IOT Gateway with Cisco WiFi

Parking is one of those universal challenges most people can relate to. Parking causes congestion on our city streets, contributes to pollution, and causes motorist frustration in most cities around the globe. As we look at ways to apply technology to tackle some of the most pressing issues facing our cities today, parking is ripe for innovation. Here are a few interesting facts:

  • 20 minutes is the average time spent looking for a parking space globally
  • 30% of city traffic consists of people looking for parking
  • 60% of drivers have given up on an activity recently due to the difficulty of finding parking
  • Parking is usually the second or third largest source of revenue in a city, however, it is exceedingly difficult to manage due to a lack of granular or continuous data on demand and behavior

Since December 2012 Streetline and Cisco have embarked on a journey to bring together the best of Cisco networking technology with the domain expertise of Streetline to deliver new “connected city” solutions to customers. Streetline has a deep history in sensing technology and award-winning applications that both capture and share real time parking data with city officials, consumers and other stakeholders. #CiscoPublicSafety Series Kick-Off: New Technologies in Public Safety Systems

We are very excited to announce the beginning of our new blog series on public safety. This series will include a number of posts that examine the intersection of technology and public safety as well as identify solutions to promote greater awareness and action.

Having worked in this field for over 15 years, I am especially enthusiastic about sharing my thoughts and starting a conversation on these issues. Before leading the Cisco’s Connected Justice Solution and Public Safety Business Development team, I was a Chief of Police and dealt with all of the same issues that agencies are dealing with today.  Throughout my career, I have been passionate about improving the criminal justice system as well as government and public safety. And to this end, I have worked to streamline processes, lower costs, and increase efficiencies through the use of technology while making first responders safer. Read More »

Cisco and Miami-Dade County Seek to Revamp Local Public Transportation Systems

Recently The Economist suggested Miami’s skyline could one day resemble Manhattan. And this could happen sooner than later due to the influx of Latin Americans, as well as Chinese, Europeans and Americans who are moving to Miami, not only to enjoy the weather, but the business opportunities. More than 50 new big towers are in construction right now at the center of Miami.

With the potential for growth in the current environment, transportation services have to be evaluated to ensure that they can serve the expected population, and won’t hinder a community’s expansion efforts.

While the Miami area’s public transportation ridership declined through the challenges of the recession, the accelerated growth that is being experienced now has to be considered as part of the community’s plans to build the Miami of tomorrow. This is why Miami-Dade County officials and Cisco have teamed up to define a strategy that will improve public transportation operations. Collaboratively, the two will begin exploring new operation models, technology and big data. Read More »

The Future of #ITConsumption in the 3rd Platform Era

The way information technology is being  sourced and used  within government and educational organizations has been changing at an increasingly rapid rate. We’re calling it the “3rd Platform” era. What does this mean? The 3rd Platform era is the era of cloud, mobility and social media. It’s driven by the ability to tap into IT solutions anywhere, anytime on any device.

Recently we have seen the rapid spread of end-user devices and new applications. Public Sector IT departments are regularly challenged to keep up with demands needed to support the new devices within this era. The change in consumption and increase in the number of new devices and applications has increased the risk of “shadow IT,” which occurs when  new IT solutions are brought into the workplace without the involvement of the IT managers. Because it’s so easy for workers and managers to purchase apps or subscribe to new online solutions, “shadow IT” is a common issue at many organizations, bringing with them risks that are unknown to many outside of IT Management.
